Ok...don't get bent when you see the title...This is one helluva vinyl recording.

Recorded at A&R Studios in New York, Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles, California, Studio "O" in Papeete, Tahiti, and Village Recorders in Los Angeles
Label MCA
MCA-5447
Producer Jimmy Buffett, Michael Utley

I was going through a bunch of different stuff (LPs) tonight...just at random. It had been a LONG time since I had played this LP. As soon as it started spinning...it was one of those...DAMN, this sounds really good...moments. It was far-and-away the best recording of the evening...or the past month or so for that matter.

I admit...I AM a Parrothead and a huge Buffett fan. This has nothing to do with that. This recording is GOOD. At least IMO.

In fact...I'm not alone in this. Here is a excerpt from a review in "Soundstage! The Vinyl Word" of the Audio Research Reference Phono Preamplifier (at a mere $6,495 back in 2000). One of his demo tracks was from this LP:
Jimmy Buffet’s "Honey Do," from One Particular Harbor [MCA, 5447], is one of my long-standing favorites on LP. With the Reference phono in use, the individual voices in the opening chorus were better separated and came across as a collection of vocals rather than the mass of sound I was used to. When the sax cut in, there was a very noticeable increase in the sense of throatiness in the instrument itself, while at the same time a slight loss in warmth and body. It was like I was hearing the instrument more clearly, but in a smaller, unfurnished room. Very enjoyable, regardless. Having been a dedicated Parrot Head and concert attendee in my youth, the slight gruffness in Buffet’s voice was recognizable for the first time as just that -- his real-life voice rather than a perceived recording flaw.

Not too shabby. The reviewer's setup with this preamp was probably in the tens of thousands of dollars...and this album was part of his demo.

Nice thing is you can probably find a good copy reasonable...maybe even new...no where near some of the prices of the 180-200 gram "reference" LPs out there. $8-$10 range.

Even if you are not a Buffett fan...if you are into vinyl, you might want to check this LP out. If you like it cool...If you don't agree...you aren't out that much.

Thanks for the info Shack. I've been collecting vinyl lately and will look for this one as I like some of Buffet's tunes. On a side note I saw your TN location, I'm in the Tri-Cities area. Are there any Polk groups in East TN that you know of and where can you find info for local gatherings? Thanks, Travis

Interesting. His albums are in general well-recorded IME.

Although I have none on Licorice Pizza, I've always liked the guy (since A1A, no Johnny-come-lately I); kind of a guilty pleasure.

    Hi Steve!

Thanks for the tip on the quality of this lp. I enjoy Buffet and most music that was recorded well.

I've got some Jimmy on vinyl and CD! Not this one though. I'll buy it just for the cover.

I'm in Knoxville. I know there are a few ET CP members around...not many though. There is a guy who posts from time to time that owns a kit 428 Cobra that lives in Maryville. There used to be a guy up in your area that was pretty active till he took advantage of some folks on the flea market.

I know your area very well. Had friends from up there when I was at UT and we would run up to ETSU just to party for the weekend. My oldest daughter went to ETSU for 2 years before transferring back to UT. I still have WQUT (101.5 FM) as a preset on my radio. Is Mr. Toads Audio still in business in downtown JC. I've spent a lot of time in that shop over the years.
