LFE Out vs Speaker Level?

Rookie question time. My old AVR had no LFE out so I had no choice but to use the speaker level inputs for sub hook up. My new AVR (Sony STR-DH510) has an LFE out so the question is do I use it? The Polk manual recommends speaker level inputs but a forum I read says this info is outdated now so use the LFE out. The system will be primarily used for home theater but also for music. Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Thanks

Use the LFE outputs, the bass management in the reciever should be much better than the sub, which usually won't even filter the lows from the main speakers.

Does the AVR manual have a recommendation? I would go with the LFE output also. I'm not familiar with that AVR but you can probably make adjustments to the cross-over settings to get the best blend of sound from your fronts and the sub.

Thanks for the replies. No recommendation in the AVR manual per se but the sole speaker connection diagram shows only the sub out option so I guess that's a de facto recommendation. The AVR allows selection of x-over points from 40Hz-200Hz in 10Hz increments. Sub x-over is infinitely variable from 80Hz-160Hz. To avoid conflict do I simply set the sub x-over higher than the AVR x-over? Also the line inputs on the sub are L/R but AVR sub out is mono. Do I need a "Y" to spilt the mono cable or does L default to mono like most applications? No info in the sub manual on this.

    Thanks

You don't need a y adapter.Like you said it is mono.
Turn your xover all the way up.

If your using the sub out connection on the AVR, and your speakers are connected to the AVR, then turn the crossover on the back of the sub all the way to the highest value. You use the crossover in the AVR's setup menu. You don't want to use both crossovers from the sub and the avr.
