Demo : The Police - Synchronicity - SACD
Receiver/Amplifier : Sony STR-DA2ES
Source : Sony SCD-C555ES
Speakers : Polk Audio RTi38 and PSW202 Subwoofer
This album has always been a favorite of mine, since I purchased the Mobile Fidelity Ultradisc years back. The MF is an outstanding cut, but doesn't hit the level that the SACD does. Synchronicity is so good, that it should ceretainly be a must have for a SACD enthusiast. This thread is just to mention the Police album, I won't pontificate about what else you should buy, just letting you know about its performance.
I will preface by saying that this whole disc is outstanding, as all SACD's I have heard are. I will just list song titles, and a brief comment of what stood out to me, if anything.
Synchronicity I - Vocals are clear and very crisp, maybe a hair of being sharp.
Walking In Your Footsteps - None.
O My God - Percussion is tight.
Mother - None, I have never actually liked this song.
Miss Gradenko - Bass is driving and solid, and the vocals create a wide soundstage...very open.
Synchronicity II - Percussion extremely tight, I could almost hear drum heads hitting the bass...but maybe I am crazy. Guitar work is well defined.
Every Breath You Take - Perfect, probably one of the best songs recorded IMO. Unforgettable guitar work, and effortless vocals.
King Of Pain - Perfect, again an excellent cut that shows so much range. Percussion, smooth vocals and bass is solid.
Wrapped Around Your Finger - Perfect, how many disc's would you listen to to find three outstanding, well crafted songs in a row? A bunch in the scheme of things probably, but really not many. This song is completely well rounded, not a single thing that one should dislike. Open soundstage.
Tea In The Sahara - Strumming bassline, feels like you can hear fingers on the neck....crazy?
Murder By Numbers - Percussion is extremely tight and a standout on this cut. Loose guitar work fits right in, and as usual vocals are dead-on.
This was a very talented group of individuals, and all contribute to this excellent album. Highly recommended.

Picked it up eh ? Is it in 2 channel or 5 channel ?
If it's both which one do you prefer ?
Also, I remember there was a "best of" album that's an sacd but not sure if it's mulit channel or just 2 channel.Polk Rt800i -Fronts

I believe all the Police re-issues, except maybe "Live" is 2 channel. This copy is a 2 channel. I guess I should add that eh?
I have listened to Pink Floyd, in 5.1 and it sounds real neat but prefer the 2 channel setup. I will probably pick up the Police issues individually, not a big greatest hits fan,CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? All of the Police re-issues are 2 channel stereo only (Including The Police Live) except for Police - Every Breath You Take:The Classics. It is a 5.1 mix and a hybrid. I have all of the the SACD re-issues and they are excellent. I generally prefer the 2 channel mixes but the DSOTM 5.1 is the best MC SACD I have heard and really works with this album.
Doro - We probably get similar results since my 2 channel rig is very close to what you are using for this demo. RT25i, 2 PSW 202s, Denon DRA-685 and Sony SCD222ES."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais
"For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible." - Stuart Chase
"Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago." - Bernard Berenson -
Shack - Thanks for clearing the re-issue, issue up I think all the albums, w/ the exception of the hits one, is worth buying.
I was trying to remember who had the 222, and it was you. Cool, yea I bet we hear the same things. How you like it? I am extremely happy with mine.

Old thread... I know.
Picked up my first SACD yesterday, and went with Synchronicity. Doro is pretty spot-on with his assessment. I can't stand Mother, either:D
Gotta say, I was pretty floored with the format. I promised myself I would never let the component or medium dictate the music to which I listen, but I can certainly see how SACD can become addictive. Besides the obvious increase in detail and dynamics, things seemed a bit more visceral. Some might say "engaging".
I was pleased to find that such an increase in detail was not accompanied by an increase in listener fatigue. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Good call on the Every Breath, King.., and Wrapped.. trio. I'd add to that -- how often do you find such an amazing trilogy of songs near the end of an album?
I suppose I'm off to pick up my next batch of SACD's.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -
Mark, this is also one of my all-time favorites. These guys brought something totally different to the table.

I think that sums up the improvement of SACD over CD in 2 channel stereo playback. SACD just sound more "natural" and "real" to my ears. Note that I don't have any audiophile-approved players for either SACD or CD, but I can readily notice the improvement on my $69.00 Grado SR60 headphones.
BTW, the SACDs of The Police are considered out of print. So get them while you still can. Don't forget that while the SACDs of The Police are single-layer SACD in the US, they are hybrids when issued overseas. I got my hybrid SACD of "Syncronicity" for US$10.00 off of ebay a while back. -
I got my new copy (single-layer) for $11 shipped off of Amazon. Thanks for the heads-up Danny. There doesn't seem to be much in the SACD catalog that qualifies as a "must-own". The Police would be an exception. And I see the Pixies Surfer Rosa has just been released.I never had it like this where I grew up. For me, Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms" is a "must own".
Mid 80s - mid 90s Genesis SACDs is coming this fall. -
Looks like I'm ready to place an SACD order soon for Dire Straits and Police.
The song "Every Breath You Take" really must be heard on a solid system. It's been played to death on the radio since it's inception, but alot of people just don't realize how brilliant, powerful and so well recorded a song it really is.
Anyone ever hear Sting comment on this song with regards to people writing and emailing him that they used this as their wedding song? He said..."WHAT??? Do you people actually know what that song is about? It's a dark song about a stalker and obsession!"
Agreed, how could a song like Mother end up on an album like this? That one has always been on my list of worst songs ever!
Off to shop...

Though I don't have it in SACD form I will concur that this is an outstanding album. It is one of my most heavily played LP's.HT

Andy Summers had to get at least one song on the album. I think he shat this one out at the last minute:DI never had it like this where I grew up. I think Stuart Copeland wrote Mother (correct me if I'm wrong). At any rate, I think when they were in the studio, Sting went to the bathroom and Stuart said...."Hey, he's gone. Hurry up and sneak that song on the album before he gets back. Shhhhh, nobody say anything!"
Shatting it out at the last minute is a correct assumption though.

I have this in DVD-A format. The Police are probably one of my favorite bands on planet Earth. But It just didn’t impress me on my system or on my Mark Levinson system in my IS350.
I have several others like (DVD-A or DTS Disk):
Metallica
Foreigner
Sting
None of them have really impressed me enough to spend a lot of time listening to them. Maybe I should give them another shot in my PS3 BlueRay.Testing
