What's up with all this forum spam out of nowhere??
There always was some forum spam once in a while but starting about 2 weeks ago i'm getting notifications from just about every forum i'm on including ClubPolk that some shcmuk replied to the thread i subscribed in and posts are in the lines of "I have a similar situation. Can be discussed" or "I'm glad i joined this forum, thank you for your post...." and there's always a link to some bs website.
Did spammers just decided to go after every forum possible since emails "you won $50,000,000.00 lotto blah blah, please reply with your info so we know where to send the money" got really played out by on??

Have no idea what's going on, but it's running rampant here. I must've reported 10 on here in the last week alone - and there was alot more than that.

Supposedly it will pass soon, we're staying on top of it pretty well I think, but there is nothing we can do if you have notifications enabled. Patrick is aware, hopefully it won't be too much longer.

    Cheers,

Doubt it will simply go away. It's on EVERY forum i'm on and most of the time it's the same username on every forum so i'm sure it's the same people/company that decided to invade forums. Unless some software/security measures will be enforced it will stay here for as long as "i'm the son of nigerian president" emails. and them **** are OLD.

The threads complaining about it after it's been explained a dozen times are just as bad....

+1 I have noticed an improvement in how quickly you guys have been responding. Good job! As it must get pretty overwhelming/frustrating at times to just clean things up and get blasted again. I'm sure you all have other work to do, than spending time on this. So just a kudos for the good work.

I've noticed the improvement as it seems they are deleted quite promptly.

Russman is right. There is a natural flow to the spam. we will go months with hardly any...then BAM!
It is like everything else, there cycles and this happens everywhere. More of a nuise to Polk than us users, no use complaining or questionning. We only need to take the time to do our share to help POlk. Report and then carry on, no big deal.

I've done over 30 bans tonight, just sitting here, refresh the page every few minutes while I knock some back and watch a Top Gear marathon.

    It's crazy, but whatever, right?

vBulletin has an option of registration moderation. With that turned on, new users need to have their usernames approved by any forum moderator before they can post. And mods can easily spot those spammers' random usernames and/or email addresses to remove them before they wreak havoc.
With the good number of mods in our CP forum, registration approval can surely be checked everytime a mod logs in, therefore new users won't have to wait for long. This might be a good option to turn on in order to prevent 95% of the spam posts.

My experience with this on other forum is that it puts an extra workload on the mods, delays those new posts but also is quite efficient to minimize spam viewed by members. This is some Polk would have to decide if worth the extra pain to them.
