Who is the best selling American band? I probably would have thought of Van Halen, Kiss, Bon Jovi, or Springsteen. I doubt I would have thought of Aerosmith.

Does anyone else find this as interesting as I do?

Actually, they are from Scotland - putting them behind other UK bands like The Beatles, Led Zep, but probably ahead of A-Ha.

Hmmm - I guess it depends on where you look (or listen). WikiPedia has Aerosmith with 150 million in sales followed by the Eagles with 120. But the Recording Industry of America has the Eagles with 100 million followed by Aerosmith with like 67.

It was on the beginning of American Idol. They introduced Steven Tyler as the lead singer of Aerosmith, "the best selling American rock band in history".

I think some of you will be surprised by the sales numbers compiled by the RIAA....

Best selling artists in the US

Who'd have thought that Celine Dion handily outsold The Police and ZZ Top....combined!!

Also, looks like Elvis is once again the biggest selling solo male artist.

Those are only sales by US record companies and sales in the US. It does not include any sales outside the US or sales by a non US company.

    From the RIAA criteria section:
Each company that requests RIAA® certification must be a firm or corporation that has headquarters in the United States and is engaged in the legitimate production and sale of sound recordings.

Only domestic sales and sales to U.S. military post exchanges may be included. The requesting company must separate PX sales from other accounts on sales sheets. Export sales outside the United States are not included in certification.

Most estimates for worldwide sales are considerably higher...but I think the ranking is generally the same.

Everything I've seen estimating worldwide sales shows The Eagles as the #1 selling US BAND with Aerosmith close behind.

Because you're one of our Friends from the North, emails have been sent to the Moderators to not have you banned, thrashed, keel-hauled, flogged, whipped, bush whacked, or gizzard-punched.

Future references to N'Sync or BSB, however, may not receive such mercy !!

It's because she is more of a sideshow than a musician.

According to wikipedia, A-ha has sales of about 51 million, which put them ahead of acts like Linkin Park (50 million) and Nirvana (also 50 million).
