Best sub enclosure for polk db 12

I currently have the db1212. The enclosure is ported and I've read online that it is tuned to 38Hz. I feel that the bass is a little too boomy and uncontrolled for my taste. I am considering taking the sub out of the polk box and installing it in a new box. I know that a large sealed box would be the absolute ideal for accuracy but it would be missing a little bit of the low bass region. On the other hand moving the sub to a box with a lower tuning frequency would give a flat response close to a sealed box but maintain a lower frequency response.

Any thoughts.
