...helps if you are over 50. One of the best speakers made in the 70's. Up there with Klipsch horns and Magnepan Typani's.

...Hint:

They reintroduced this model last year.

...haven't even hooked them up yet. Had to move and load them by myself. 110 lbs apiece. Needed to take out back seat of car to fit. 40" x 16" x16"

...Love the hobby ...love the challenge....HATE getting old .

Are you using KLH 9's as a coat rack behind that speaker -- or is that an acoustic dampening panel?

...you MUST be a youngster. Those are Magnepan MG 1's (1979) - rebuilt and are still my favorites.

Do you live IN a thrift store? That picture has so much randomness about it, I don't think I could stage it if I tried. Wild.

....you are both partially right. They are the ESS Amt Monitors....not the rock version.

Ess is "BACK" !! and this is their Flagship, with a reduced 10" woofer but same 12" passive. They are also selling replacement parts. Awesome.

I grew up listening to my dad's AMT1a with the pyramid tapered shape top. The Heil's are awesome and back then before subs the bass was pretty nice too. I actually got to see them last weekend (he has them in storage) and unfortuately one of the passives on the rear is damaged. But on a good note he says I can have them on loan until he has a place to use them in again. Give me a bit and I'll find the pics and post if I'm able.

I plan on it. Growing up with these I was never satisfied w/ sound from just any speaker. I'm thrilled with my Polk Monitor 10's but you can't beat the Heil for clarity IMO. Anyways here's my 1st attempt at adding pics so I'm not sure if it'll work.

I owned a pair of AMT 1d's for years. One of my all time favorite speakers and regret selling them.

Right now I'm into Polk and Magnepan. I have two sets of Maggie SMGa's with the full razor treatment. They sound great but now that I know ESS is back, I may drive across town and check out their new offerings (they are maybe 30 minutes from me).

    Good news indeed!

    Thanks.

....well, after a good nights rest and a lot of Advil.....I was able to bend over and thread those bare wire connectors. When were 5 way connectors invented?

Anyway, might be my favorite speaker of all time. Beats out the Maggies because of the extended bass, no sub needed. That Heil tweeter is amazing. Music sounds LIVE. Been playing all my live Jazz from the Blues Alley and others. Live at the Pawn Shop is Awesome. Right now I only have the ESS's hooked up to an old Proton (Nad) amp (40 watts per) ( B&K pro10mc preamp). Tomorrow is another day. Will hook them up to an Adcom 535 II or a Musical Fidelity amp.
....if you ever see a pair of ESS speakers with the Heil tweeters....jump on them. The tweeters today are being sold for $350 apiece new (- $250 used). But bring a hand truck with air tires. 110 lbs apiece.

link below has a lot of pics of inners and design.

    dee1949,

thanks for the links, don't know if you saw my pics above, but I think I'm going to go ahead and order some new passives and try to bring these home to enjoy again. It's nice finding others that appreciate this great brand of speakers, most people I've run across have no clue about ess or the heil tweeters.

Dee, where can those PR's be found that are in TNHNDYMANs speakers pictured above? They are just a piece of cardboard (something like that) with a foam covering and a foam surround. Nothing like a regular PR from say a Polk speaker.

I have some old ESS speakers that had those same type PR's in them. I never could find the same PR so I bought some cheap woofers just to fill the holes.

Update.....have been playing around with these beast for the last few days....below is my impressions: pics of mine vs new version.

....Best speaker I have had in house.....over 30 years and 100's of speakers. My favorite speakers in house (until now) have been the Maggies MG-1's

(w/rebuilt wires and croseovers - w/SUB). Unfortunately they are not quite in the same league.

    - Magnapans and the ESS Monitors have one major thing in common ...and it's the reason they are my favorites......both are bipolar....sound radiates out

    front and back.....live sound.

    - Major reasons that ESS AMT - Monitors win out:

1 - NO need for "HIGH end" subwoofer - guarantee these will compete with a $1000.00 music subwoofer. Most of weight (110lbs apiece) and cabinet size is to provide for 12" woofer and 12" passive.....well braced, designed, and integrated. Supposedly goes from 30hz to 23khz + 3db

2 - Easy to drive (93db efficiency) with tube equipment and lower powered highend SS amps . I am driving them with a Musical Finality A170 amp....85 watts

per channel. My house is brick and neighbors house is Stucco.....after 1hr....complaint.....windows were rattling. Live music is "LIVE".....you are there!!!
Unfortunately so are your neighbors. Not for apartment dwellers.

3 - and MOST importantly....The Heil Air-Motion transformer uses revolutionary, and unique, technology that remains unsurpassed and is state-of-the art. The

key to the system is the design of its patented, double-sided diaphragm and its magnetic components that concentrate the sound unknown in conventional

transducers. The sound signal moves five times faster than the air-motion of a conventional cone driver.

......all I can say is.....you have to hear a pair and make your own appraisal. Any Polkies in WASHINGTON DC area are welcome to give them a listen. Zip is

20017. 5 blocks from a Metro station. if in the area...stop in.

_ _ PS - just found this out (prices):

... new Models- a new AMT, and Flagship (LD-10LR) with a dipole tweeter.

The LD-10LR is $3495/pr. ( like mine (Monitor) with a reduced 10" woofer (mine is 12")

and the AMT is $2495/pr. (Limited edition of the smaller pyramid version)

    - The Heil Air-Motion transformer drivers are $399.00 apiece. Other replacement parts available.

    - the new speakers probably won't be available for a few more months. They were introduced below:

ESS Labs., LLC "ESS WILL BE @T.H.E. Show 2011"

    THE FLAMINGO LAS VEGAS
COME VISIT US IN ROOMS 4005-4007
ESS LABS WILL BE THERE FROM JAN.4 – JAN 9TH

PS - the version I have of the Monitors is their last revision.....with rubber surrounds and matching passive radiator without the magnet structure, but with the basket. No foam to worry about.

Forgot - for those interested in the Monitor revision history:

Four unpublished revisions took place on those AMT MONITORS. None of these four were labeled anything other than, AMT MONITOR.

Early versions were with silver AMT units, metalized capacitor films, bextrene woofer cones w/ open cell foam surrounds, and .75in styrene disc radiators on the aluminum rings w/ the same suspension.

1st mid-build revisions came with flat black AMT units, bextrene woofer cones w/ rolled-edge treated surrounds, and .5in styrene discs w/ open cell foam suspension.

2nd mid-build revisions incorporate a huge change to the radiator, they were made to reflect the same outer rolled-edge suspension of the bextrene woofer and updated to a conical bextrene passive. When this radiator was introduced, it attached to an entire cast woofer frame (less the magnet and motor structure) obviously. The inner coil area behind the dual dustcaps was sealed up with an inverted pulp disc.

Final build revision on the AMT MONITOR came circa 1979 when they utilized the SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) half-roll suspension on both the bextrene woofer and conical bextrene radiator. This final build was in production during the outphasing of the 1B towers hence the SBR suspension changeover, which the 1C line of towers took on exclusively.
