Sony STR-DE598 settings Question

My brand new psw505 is arriving tomorrow.
I am trying to adjust my receiver to the best of my ability
I have very limited knowledge on sound settings
From what I have read, all 5 speakers should be set to small
The sub should be set to off
I am connecting the new sub with the speaker cables in and out to the front speakers.

THIS IS MY QUESTION:

when i SET THE SUB TO "OFF" ON THE RECIEVER, THE FRONT SPEAKERS ARE AUTOMATICALY SET TO LARGE.

There seams to be no way to change them to small.

All the other speakers are on small, but the fronts wont change with the sub "off" option.

What should I do?

Correct me if I`m wrong, but if using the speaker wire in and out from the front speakers to hook up the sub, should not the front speakers be set to small?

Why do you want to wire your sub to the AVR? Wire all the speakers directly to the Sony and run a sub cable to the PSW505? Then turn the SUB Menu of the Sony, to ON!

That Sony has a dedicated LFE sub out. Get yourself a cable and hook it up that way! Then you can set your speakers to any size you wish. But SMALL is recommended in any case so that the sub takes the burden off the AVR. Especially a Sony as that AVR does not have a lot of POWER reserves but should be adequate with everything set to small and a sub cable out to the PSW505.

Yeah, just use a sub cable. There's no reason to wire all your speakers in that method anymore.

OK you are talking me into getting a sub cable.

It would have to be about 25 feel long.

How will I find an rca cable that long?
Is it just a regular rca cable?

Will it make a noticeable difference as opposed to using the speaker cable method that I have now?

Why did you ask this twice? Only one thread is necessary.

Not everyone knows that Nguyendot especially when not every room gets the same amount of traffic.

I see. You need a LONG run. No problem. Save yourself some money and check this site out:

    http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?keyword=subwoofer+cable&x=20&y=11

    25' and longer cables available.

Using the cable method will free up the AVR to power the speakers directly and let the sub do what it's supposed to, i.e., deal with LFEs.

OK I will try to run the rca cable.

What about the speakers? I will have to change the large/small settings.

What should I change them to?

My guess is change them all to small, with the sub setting set to "on"

Keep everything to small and the sub "on". That should give you your best performance from the Sony.

You should get the option for small when you set it to on....you can verify this now in about a minute. If you don't, just keep it set to large and move onto bigger things.

I am so excited about the 505. I have been listening to a 202 for several years. This 505 is a huge upgrade. I cant wait to hear it roar.

I noticed that the 505 has inputs for filtered and unfiltered "sub in"

It says to check my owners manual to see if the sony str-de598 has a filtered or unfiltered "sub out".

I can not find this anywhere in the owners manual.

Does any one know the answer to this?

You want to use the unfiltered in on the sub because the Sony will do the 'filtering'. Almost all AVR sub-outs are meant to be plugged into either LFE or Unfiltered sub ins on the Sub itself.

Have fun....just happen to catch your post as it's lunch time?

OK. The 505 is all hooked up. I tried the RCA cable and noticed no difference in the sound. I went back to my original speaker cable in/out from the front speakers. I think it sounds better that way. I have the center, and rear speakers set to small. I have the front speakers set to large. There really aren't that many more settings that are available. The only one that I was unsure of is the speaker Htz level. I think that's what its called.
There is a big range of settings on that. Right now I have all the speakers set to 100. It goes up to 160 if I should change it.

    Is the 100 setting good?

Thanks for all of the replieys and help so far.

The 505 sounds great. My livingroom is thumping once again.

My front, rear, and center speakers are Polk RM2360`s

I am still trying to get all I can out of this set up.

Only two settings that I don't know what to do with.

Speakers can be set to something called htz. I have them set to 100. It can be lower or it can go up to 160. What is best for my system?

Also there is a setting for two speakers that says hi/lo. What is this?

Currently, all speakers are set to small. front set to large, sub is hooked up with the speaker cables from front speakers.

    AVR-- Sony STR-DV598
    4 speakers-- Polk RM2360`s
center-- Polk came with the RM2360`s
    Sub-- Polk PSW505

It's a good bet that those satellites can't reach a clean a true 100hz (frequency low). Check the specs on the speaker's range. If you only have one more option then go to 160hz...but a little lower would be better.

Also, turn your sub frequency crossover to FULL throttle, whatever that is...150 or 160hz or?

    Have fun!

Dammit, I don't understand the answer.

The speaker setting is one of the options in the avr menu.

What is a sub frequency crossover? No way its the knob on the back of the sub, right?

I realise that I sound like a complete idiot asking these questions.
Please be patient with me, I might have no idea what I`m doing but I am trying my best to make this system sound as good as is possible. Hopefully with your help I can get the best possible audio to come out of my awesome Polk speakers.
