Moved my stereo stuff out of the big bedroom

I have received my New Onkyo TX-8555 a little while back and never said anything about it which is a new thing for me because I was very happy:) anyways, I had all my stuff in a wooden floor bedroom and the speakers were 12 feet away from me and I couldn't really the good stuff because it was so lively in the room

I recently moved my stereo stuff into a back room 8'x22', yeah long and narrow, it used to be a porch. my speakers are about 5 feet from my head now so I'm rockin out! the room is super dead too. I have some throws I'm thinking about hanging on the walls behind the speakers, unless I shouldn't hang them behind the speakers, I don't know.

Wow, sorry it sounds so choppy but I just had a cup of coffee and have been wired for about 2 hours now lol

It's amazing how much of a difference just moving speakers around can make isn't it. Glad you're enjoying it!

yes it is, and thanks. it's a mess like I said, I'm sure after all the clothes are gone the room will be the least bit lively but I do have those cheap throws to hang up so that won't be a problem.

Pros and cons both ways... Either way your speakers likely end up about 6' to 8' apart and you end up ~6' from them.

I assume you have toed in your speakers a bit (unless they're SDA's; what do you have?), and that's a good thing as it gets their axis off parallel to the walls. Play with their positioning in the above range changing the toe-in so they stay aimed at your listening position. Find a sweet spot for starters...

Your long wall set up brings near, rear wall reflections into play that can destroy a soundstage and dull the sound. Moving the listening position forward 1' or so from the wall is often all that's required, but some acoustic treatment behind you may be in order.

Assuming one speaker is relatively close to one of your short, side walls, the other prime treatment candidate is that close, short, side wall.

Behind your speakers may well require treatment as well, but it would be third on my list of concerns...

I wish I had some SDA's! but I built my speakers. they aren't close to the short walls. I have them pointed in more than straight ahead, they actually don't sound bad pointed straight but better pointed in.

I actually don't have room to move forward lol but I mean it sounds great the way it is, should I just leave it? I will eventually try hanging those throws up behind me and the behind the speakers and around the room

there are no magic forumla's only magicians with a formula....now its a matter of timexspeedxdistance....with a bit of amplitude and angulation for good measure...have fun and enjoy hanging some treatments...they do change things for the better. If you have a sound disc you can run some sweeps with a simple SPL meter to see if you have any freq. spikes/nodes.

well the Onkyo has peaks of some 240 watts per channel so amplitude is no problem. I'll just play around with it. thanks all!

No problems... you're welcome...

The "amplitude" I think Ted was referring to is the result of room dimensions and frequency producing standing waves that either reinforce or negate that frequency. Otherwise I think he was saying it's trial and error with treatments...

If you're happy, enjoy. Down the road you can always mark exact placement and angles with painters tape, and move things around including treatments. You just may stumble across "better"... or not.

well its not totally haphazard....google audio reflection points or some such thing and you can research the basic sound problems you might address.

There are primary reflection points that can be located and dealt with.

One example is your near, side wall. Sit in your listening position and have someone hold a mirror on the side wall. Move it along the wall until you see the reflection of your speaker nearest that wall in the mirror.

It's all geometry... if you're good at pool...

... and then there's the floors and the ceilings and...
