No Sub?

Guess this is the place for this question. Anyway, since I'm more of a 2 channel fan some things in "home theater" still baffle me. Anyway, I have a 5.0 surround system with no sub. Why?, well, to be honest I never got around to picking one up and it's not my priority I suppose.

Now to the question. What crossover setting should I use with no sub? I have heard that without a sub I should set all speakers to large and use the lowest Hz setting. Is this correct?

Any input would be appreciated!

The setting I use is all speakers set to small, cross the sub in the AVR at 80hz or 120hz, turn the sub setting to 160hz (not that it matters) and adjust the volume to your desired level.

With no sub, you want no crossover setting and run them large.

You're missing out without a sub.

Yes, I know I'm missing out without a sub but guess I couldn't justify it yet. When I eventually get ahold of one I'm sure I'll wonder how I ever got along without it!

Thanks for the input however. I'll try no crossover setting and run them all on large.

I sort of love/hate this stuff sometimes...

Yeap no crossover whatsoever. Turn the setting on your receiver for the sub to OFF.

With that said, the best improvement to any HT is the addition of a subwoofer. It takes the load of the receiver to produce the highs and mids, allows more headroom, allows your speakers to more faithfully produce the sound without being driven hard, and provides a box that you can best locate for the best bass. Not including, the most improtant contribution ROCKIN BASS!

I would highly recommend getting a sub. You aren't hearing all the information that is present in music without one.

Bah! He's hearing enough of it, that it apparently doesn't matter.

Ha! That's funny right there! Actually I'm running the surround on multi-channel inputs from the player...

It all depends on the speaker. One would think fullrange but you could have some small speakers or satellite speakers.

I run mine full bore, with no sub, and believe me, I'm not missing nothing down low. Then again, I have big floorstanders with 3 12 in. cones in each pushing air. Lots of variables to take into consideration about a sub. Speakers that can handle the lows, amps, room size. For HT I might be missing the absolute lowest of the low end, but my main concern is 2 channel. Still, I have heard subs that don't put out as much low end as my floorstanders. To each his own though and you never know until you try.

    Omg!

Don't you know that every HT expert will tell you that no speaker in existence -even floorstanders can properly reproduce bass - ONLY a sub can do that.

And do you realize the sssttrraaaainnnn you are putting on your amp to make it power all that scary low bass stuff?

    Not......
