Power Cable Question

I was thinking of upgrading the power cable on my PS3 slim and my Denon receiver. But I'm having a hard time finding good cables (psaudio, pangea, shunyata, etc.) that use the 2 pin IEC connector (the Denon uses a 2 pin). Is it safe to use a power cable w/ 3 pins (female) in a 2 pin connector (male)? Will they even fit?

Wikipedia says C17 will accept a C13 / C14 cable...so perhaps that answers my question.

So not so much for video sources? Or are you referring to the PS3 in particular?

If you have a two pin IEC, it's called a C7 and no, a regular power cord will not fit the C7 IEC.

PS Audio use to make a C7 cord, but doesn't seem to anymore. I don't think Shunyata ever did. Not sure about Pangea...weren't they coming out with one? I believe Signal makes one.

IMO, it's always a good idea to upgrade power cords.

C7 is the small one I think - ie. the one that fits the PS3 slim. It's the one for the receiver I am having trouble finding - c17 I think.

Ok, I had to look this up. Yes, it safe to use a power cable w/ 3 pins (female) in a 2 pin connector (male) and yes, it will fit.

Power cords will NOT offer any picture quality of sound quality improvement unless the power cord is damaged. I've talked to engineers at SurgeX and on many other forum/websites this has been discussed and there is no performance improvement with a IEC Power Cord. Only replace power cords if they are damaged. It is just like the HDMI cable debate. Transparent Cable offers a $1000+ power cord which is like AudioQuest's $1000+ HDMI cable, it's a marketing scam.

That is a 'normal' power cable. Any three pin power cable works fine. I have a 3 pin Pangea AC-14SE on my SACD player, which has a 2 pin connector. The 90 degree part is simply for space saving, and probably is not necessary unless you have your gear shoved up against the wall.

beat me to it I knew what he was trying to say,they just don't have the ground pin on the unit. more and more are not coming with the ground pin on the female IEC

Don't worry about the 90 degree part - this was just some random photo I found. I just wanted to illustrate what exactly I was talking about

I was looking at the Pangea cables as well..

AC-9 for the receiver
AC-14SE for the touch power supply
AC-14SE C-7 for the PS3 slim

Can you prove this with any testing results with numbers, I'd like to see it.

You can do a search under DarqueKnight. He has numerous threads about power cords with numbers and pretty color pictures.

However, it is more important to experience these things for yourself as numbers don't tell all.

There is nothing simple about a cable question, the biggest hot button in this hobby. You can talk common sense all day and all night about how one needs to experiment rather than read other's opinion's, but the naysayers have very little common sense. They would rather have someone else tell them or show them that difference's exist rather than hear/learn for themselves.

Cables matter, period!

The PS3 doubles as one of the best/most economical Blu-ray players on the planet, and the video quality improved on mine with a very affordable "VH Audio Flavor 3" I bought from a Polkie here a year or so ago in the Classifieds.

Yep, digitalvideot needs to respect that you DID NOT ASK for numeric measurement studies.

nguyendot expressed polite doubt, but digital was downright confrontational to F1's response and deserves the wrath of Polkies like me to reign down upon him.

He should start HIS OWN thread if, in fact, he is contemplating throwing down some of his hard-earned for a power cable for his BDP.

If he can then calmly read the responses he gets, make a choice and watch his TV screen, then he can tell the responders in HIS THREAD that he thinks they are wrong, otherwise, he needs to calmly shut up.

I dunno, if you open up your older PS3 and see how the power wires are routed, and how low grade they are.... I'm not thinking a power cord change on the PS3 is going to yield that much. I've tried shielded vs unshielded and don't see any difference. It looks good either way. To each their own. I definitely heard an improvement after upgrading the power cords on both Parasound amps, so I believe the upgrades are worth it on the audio front.

It sounds like you've done some experimentation on the PS3 front, so your feedback is definitely useful. It's not like I'm unhappy w/ the PS3's HD / Blu-ray playback or anything - I just figured since I'd be getting some new power cords for the SB and receiver, maybe the PS3 would benefit.

Anyway I'll keep reading on it.

I had a signal digital reference power cord and it sounded better with my dragonpro2 than a furutech power cord that cost twice as much.
Different PCs may sound better on different gear.
Its all about synergy.

LOL @ someone taking this too personal and swearing who can't stand getting questioned, awwww another middle class guy who got ripped off spending too much money for a cable and thought in his head he saw or heard a slight difference sort of like people who buy HDMI wires in Best Buy and think the price of a Monster HDMI cable determines it's performance.

hmmmm now let's see, should I trust some regular average random blogger on which cables to buy who resorts to swearing when questioned about the cost/performance ratio of cables or the top performing muscians in pop, rock, classical, hip hop, Grammy nominated DJ's and mixing engineers in multi million dollar recording studios who perform in front of 100,000 people who use Mogami to give me a idea on the performance cost ratio of a wire? As Mogami is a bargain compared to most "high end" snake oil cables.
