And the exodus starts

Why do people get so freaked out and bolt from work early over snow? There are no predictions of any accumulations before 6pm and current views out of the window support that idea. Yet, at 2pm, people are frantically leaving the office to "beat the snow". Never mind that the 2nd storm front that is bringing all of the snow they are worried about is still 8 hours away.

I could understand if there was decent accumulation on the ground already and the pace of the storm was picking up but as of right now, there isn't even a flurry.

Maybe I'm just over-reacting to those who are over-reacting. Hopefully the train ride home will be uncrowded and uneventful if all these sissy, nattering ninnies are home already wringing their hands and eating their milk, bread and eggs.

We've got predictions of 6-12 inches of snow in the Valley here where I live...

    If that happens...hello school days!

Eh, it's probably just people wanting a reason (excuse) to get out of the office early, at least that's usually what it is down here. Besides, aren't you people up there used to the snow?

Once bitten, twice shy as they say. Last year there were two separate storms where people from my area were caught in traffic jams that lasted 8+ hours. You deal with that a few times, you tend to be overly cautious.

Why not....if the boss is dumb enough to allow everyone out the door with a full days pay, you wouldn't leave too? They aren't freaked over the snow, they are freaking over a HALF DAY!!!
Unfortunately, A) my company isn't like that, and B) they know i have 4wheel drive and can stay a little longer to make up for others lost time.....lose lose i say.
Unlike the car pile-up video, i'll drive in 4Low and pump my breaks when the weather hits.

You would think so but apparently not.

All the people who have left so far take trains.

I take the train too. I live 1.82 miles from the train station. My train has stopped once for snow and it was when we had the 2+ feet over Christmas in 2009. People could leave normal time today and still not have problems getting home on the trains.

Sorry, I just think it's silly.

If we regularly had snow falls that were measured in feet and not inches then yes, I'd be more concerned at this point myself. But this is NJ. We get snow falls like that once every few years and a catastrophic one once a decade. The average snowfall amounts are between 8 and 10 inches. NJ, PA, Delaware and NY are all well equipped to handle such weather conditions and even if it does get to a debilitating point, it rarely sticks around enough to cause problems more than a few days. We currently have snow on the ground but roads and walkways are clear and dry.

We're an over-cautious and pampered society, that's why. I love the days, and take great pride in them, when we have some snow in the Chicago metro and I make the 42 mile commute to the office just fine, and pull in and there are like 6 cars in the parking lot/garage. I then call my team that are local, and all of whom live within 10 miles of the office, and ask why they haven't made it into work? They hate me on those days. Last time they work for an old Iowa farm kid who owns a 4x4!

Snowmageddon is indeed forecast in MA; 12 to 18" at my house (i.e., a typical winter storm outside of the I-495 corridor)... I am planning to work at home tomorrow...

The milk/bread/eggs phenomenon has always puzzled me to no end. Talk about 3 things that aren't good for long term storage.

Obviously we're not stocking up for blizzards that leave us trapped indoors for weeks on end, but the panicked masses usually shop that way...

Hah, before I quit smoking my "snow run" consisted of a couple cases of beer and a carton of cigs.

We keep getting missed in regards to snow. One storm went south of us; this one is north of us. Looks like the middle of VA is a safe place to be this winter.

Really, isn't 8-10 inches a SIGNIFICANT snowfall in that area. At least that's what I remember growing up. 6" or more was a snow day off from school. And I don't remember that many of those. There were one or two 2-3' extravaganzas in my 20 years in Pa.

Up in the great white North under Canada we're expecting 4-8" or less than Boston? For us, that's a DUSTING which I'll probably drive out into to get to work tomorrow. One pattern I have seen in Maine is that we are NOT getting the kind of snowfall we used to. That storms are tracking East and blowing off the coast after they hit Boston, or sometimes even below Boston?

Rather than getting into a weather discussion about why? We'll just call it changes in Global Tracking so as to remain politically neutral!

I can see snowfalls of a couple feet snowing people in. 10 inches of snow I can walk through if I have to. It's not a catastrophic disaster. Yeah, it can cause power outages and such but the way people act, including crybaby douchenozzles like that LibertyC punk, it's pathetic. This snow is going to hit tonight. Morning commutes are going to suck more wind than a Hoover and by the afternoon, roads will be clear, the sun will be shining and everything will be back to normal, just coated in white. Yet everyone freaks out anyway.

If I do stay home, the only reason I would do so is so that I can clear from my driveway the 2+ feet of snow the plow is going to deposit in it like it does every snowfall. I really don't want to work an entire day and have to clear that when I get home. Especially since I will have no location at which to park my car. Maybe I can clear it in the morning before I leave.

But 4:36 PM in Center City Philadelphia, there is a minimal amount of people in the office and not a single flake is currently falling. The catastrophe was supposed to begin an hour and a half ago at the latest.

    Silliness.

It's been snowing here a couple of hours now but it's business as usual here like any other day lol. Even when he had our storms last month when we were getting 2 feet, businesses were still open, people still out and about, only the schools shut down once or twice. Kind of makes me laugh when people freak out about these storms like its the end of the world. Anyways, Jstas, you need to put a bigger gas tank on that thing and make it more fuel efficient so that you can come clear my driveway in the morning:tongue:

Because nobody wants to risk being snowed in and trapped at work in a Day After Tomorrow scenario with you.
