Anyone else let their inbox's get out of control?

I typically save all my emails other than spam...and since I reach no where near my inbox's limit, not really a big deal.

But I also use folders, so ideally, the only ones in my actual inbox are the ones that are relevant. I try and do a clean up every few months to make sure this is done, but sometimes I lose track. I just cleaned out one of my inbox's yesterday and I still have more to do, but i had about 115 new messages and 500 total messages in my inbox. (now down to 1 new message and 200 total). Was going to start on my other main email today...but its kind of daunting. 85 new emails of 1079 total...all the way back to november 08 (evidently the last time i cleaned it out)

Anyone else like this? lol. I'm just going to try and clear out a 100 a day when I have time...so hopefully by next month itll be more manageable!

I receive over 300 emails a day at work. It's a little hard to keep that under control sometimes.

Wow. You're screwed. I was going to say I receive close to 100/day and thought that was too much.

Deal with them as you get them, or don't bother at all. Going back every few months (or YEARS!!) seems ridiculous to me, and is exactly as you describe - daunting. At some point you've opened an email to deal with it, why not take an extra half second and decide whether to folder it, keep it, delete it, etc?
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

wow. I'm sure I get more, but I dont count all the spam I get. The only spam I get in my inbox is stuff I didnt really know I signed up for in the first place. A simple 'unsubscribe' click fixes that.

Down to 3 new messages and 910 total. Calling it a day...haha

I've got exactly 1800 emails right now, after cleaning out a couple thousand from a could years ago.

I have the really important ones in their own folder, but I keep the rest for archiving purposes.

I try to keep it 'managed' to an extent. I hate having clutter and disorganization, though admittedly my folder system isn't what it should be for storing important emails.

I have my main gmail account grab my email from all my other addresses, so this would be indicative of my total email #'s.

    Inbox: 12 new, 50 total.
Archived: 34 in two separate folders.

Like I said, not a great system of dealing with it, but obviously I have a low enough volume that it's still more than manageable.

    Personal email - 70 total
Work email - 5984.....Outlook cries every time i open her up.

Archiving is good an all but i would have 200 individual folders making it just as difficult to find an email. Name search is my best friend!!

It may not cost YOU anything, but if this is a work account, you are costing your employer.

Here's our top 5 abusers at work, by size of mailbox:

    36,834 items ; 9,214,707kb
    25,720 items ; 8,857,458kb
    22,974 items ; 7,512,161kb
    20,402 items ; 5,829,376kb
    23,359 items ; 5,125,933kb

And all of these folks are laptop users with local copies of their mail on the PC. It baffles me how they can even work with as slow as it is.

Oh, and I'm not allowed to impose mailbox limits or force people to archive off the server, so our backup times keep growing, as do the hard drive requirements.

I'm in the couple hundred per day range. I honestly can't delete anything that has any pertinence to work. I was asked just the other day for information that was in an email from December of 2009.

Sent items are also incredibly useful for me. I may have 3 iterations of the same spreadsheet and will have no clue which one I sent a client 4 months ago.

My current inbox. I have surpassed the 24k mark:

I probably get about 30-40 emails a day, but I'm in-box "anal" as hell. I create sub folders to organize everything. Can't stand a full in-box. Most of the stuff is informational--not action type mails. The "action required" emails I'll leave in my in-box until completed. Once an action is complete, all related emails go into a project specific folder, organized by contract number/project name. My "Projects" folder has 2 sub-folders; "active" and "closed" actions. When everything for a project is completed (shipped), it gets moved to the closed sub-folder.

Since disposition instructions for my type of logistic files is generally "destroy 2yrs after completion", emails over 2yrs old get deleted unless they concern cryptographic equipment shipments.
