Well I finally got the PJ up and running and all I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!!

Just finished watching 2 Blu Ray movies and if it weren't for the fact that I gotta get up and go to work in the morning I'd have watched a few more.

This thing is fantastic right out of the box...and the 100" Carada screen is excellent!

Ok, enough ranting, I have to go to bed now....hopefully I'll sleep.

Someone said that once you go to projectors, you can't go back. Well let me tell you that you are correct.

Nice mini review on that PJ you have. Glad you like the Carada screen, they are excellent screens btw. Mild soap/water if you have to clean it, I usually do so every 6 months. I use that Swifter Duster to wipe it once a week. PJ should last you some time, enjoy it. 100" screen is pretty darn big too so sit back and enjoy it. When the funds permit pick up a Paragon Contempo popcorn machine and your done.

That's what I dig about the Epsons - so long as you get a fairly neutral screen, they're pretty close to accurate right out of the box. Definitely more so than other companies have achieved or most consumers would appreciate. Unless you're just really anal about your video quality, you can pretty much fire it up and be happy.

I, of course, am really anal so my 8500UB is tweaked like mad with a colorimeter to get it about as close to D65 and proper color gamut as possible. That said, it didn't take much to get it that way. Glad you like the 8700, Joe!

Yep, I love my Sanyo on a 100 inch screen. Congrats. The level of competition in the PJ space is just amazing.

We should start our own pj owners club on polk lol

I love my epson too. I had projectors before my epson but you sound like a pj virgin....if so then thats a great way to get laid the first time

My first time was with an old sanyo ,kinda like a big fat girl who gets overheated and sweats alot , not a pleasant experience

Yeah, I went through 2 Sanyos before my Epson. Their customer service was a nightmare and both units burned the panels out well before they should have. I thought my Z2000 was outstanding... until I hooked up the 8500UB. NO FREAKIN' COMPARISON. I will never buy Sanyo again.

I've been running an Epson 1080UB for 2 years now on a 96" DIY screen, and yes, once you go FP you never go back. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING can compare to a good FP rig.

I started with a Panasonic FP, then to the Sanyo Z3 then to Epson. I'll say this, only Epson will get my repeat business, the other two...junk projectors.

Here is a screen-shot I took today with me el-cheapo camera:

    IMG_17.jpg

Here is a few things I noticed too:

    1. For some reason, my basement seems bigger. I don't know if it's the effect of having such a large screen, but it does seem bigger.

    2. For some reason, the sound sounds better, I don't know if it's the effect of having such a large screen, but it does sound better.

    3. For some reason, my smile is wider, I don't know if it's the effect of having such a large screen, but it does seem wider.

    4. For some reason, I took the afternoon off, I don't know if it's the effect of having such a large screen, but I did take it off.

Here is the downside to owning a projector:

    1. I'm going to have to find a way so that my wife and daughter can use it without having to turn on 57 buttons to run the sound system.

    2. I will have to set up a small lcd monitor somewhere because I can no longer do my P90X exercises in front of the tv, unless I want to exercise with the lights off.

    3. The lights need to "always" be off when the pj is on. With a plasma you can have the lights on for times when the subject being viewed is more "background" while conversation is going on with friends.

    4. This is stupid, but I feel like I'm wearing out the bulb unless I watch something of "value". I expect this feeling to wear off soon.

    5. There will be increased costs to running a projector. Mainly from wanting to invite everyone I know over to watch a movie and having to go out and buy snacks and drinks and whatever....

    6. There will be increased costs to running a projector. Mainly from wanting to go out and buy more and more Blu Rays.

All thanks to this forum I'm hooked. Grimster was nice enough to invite me into his home to check his out while helping me plan my very own room. Saw his Epson 1080 and was floored. I'm a big fan of the JVC projectors , though I recommend Epson to friends alot. If you want the next level, look at a JVC. Classy in every way gents.

A Harmony One should solve this problem, or any other Universal type remote.

Some ambient light should be a non-issue, your Epson can get plenty bright with ease.

    4. This is stupid, but I feel like I'm wearing out the bulb unless I watch something of "value". I expect this feeling to wear off soon.

No worries your lamp should last you around 2000-3000 hrs no problem. I was the same way too when I installed my 1st one.

    5. There will be increased costs to running a projector. Mainly from wanting to invite everyone I know over to watch a movie and having to go out and buy snacks and drinks and whatever....

Get yourself a Popcorn machine. I paid $300 for mine, it will pay for itself in no time at all. As for drinks I have a mini-fridge in the HT loaded with my fav beverages and of course chocolates (M&M's, Kit Kats, Reese's cups, Almond Monds, etc)

    6. There will be increased costs to running a projector. Mainly from wanting to go out and buy more and more Blu Rays.

No problem, Amazon has great prices on BD's. Replacement lamp is in the 200-300 price range, maybe less for the Epsons.

    Joe

Last not least, glad your happy and excited about the setup.

I did see the Optra (can't remember which model) that was better that the 8700. But it was twice the price! Also a Panasonic 4000ae (or something like that) but the Epson was better.

Oh, and I didn't rely on my eyes only. I brought my daughter with me to audition these machines...she's got the photographers "eye" and works with Photoshop and colors etc etc....so she was able to notice and point out the differences between the various machines.

congrats on the PJ. Once you go to a PJ its hard to go back. I understand though about the whole wasting the bulb on just whatever content. Thats why I still have a TV in the bedroom for when I want to watch some news etc or things I can fall asleep to so I'm not wasting my bulb and I keep the HT just for gaming and movies.

I originally had a 42" RPTV in my living room and I mounted my screen so it dropped in front of it, with the theory being that I'd watch regular TV on the RPTV and then use the projector for movies.

Yeah, that didn't last. The RPTV went in the spare bedroom. ;)

Get a URC then. Say an Mx-880 or 980. They can be programmer to do anything that's IR compatible. I even have mine with movie sound clips during my macros. It's "more difficult" to program over Harmony but they work, last and can be customized to the hilt.
