Can anyone tell me about the M-85? I'm picking up some SRS-2's and the M-85 is part of the deal. Thanks

That amp is the real deal. Something like 30w in pure class A, and some pretty impressive headroom. Give it a shot and see if you like it. If you don't like it, let me know, i'd be interested for the right price.

A lot of people like the sound of them, but that's purely subjective. From a power standpoint, you should have no problem. I looked around some, and apparently a magazine years ago measured over 1000w of dynamic power, so i think you'll be just fine.

Nope, nope, nope. The Class A circuit is simply a sliding bias control, NO way that amp plays 30W in Class A, not a chance more like 5-7 watts and it's debateable if it can even really be called class A. It's a class A/B amp from start to finish, period.

I used to sell those amps brand new back in the day and they are decent enough, but the Adcoms, Luxmans and Nakamichi's of the day played circles around them. Nothing to write home about IMO. Rated high is watts on paper, but the 60wpc Adcom 535 could keep up with it into difficult loads. And in one test the baby Adcom actually was the prefered choice into a difficult load.

If you got a good deal on it, enjoy it and report back. IMO, I didn't think the Yammy amps were all that impressive soundwise for all the marketing gibberish and flourescent meters, etc. Lots of show, average go.

The protection circuitry on this series of amps is on the cheaper side and almost always fails at some point especially since the amps are older now. As far as driving any speaker, it won't. Should be fine for SDA's though.

I have this M-85 and several people want to buy it, can anyone tell me what this thing is worth? The amp works fine no problems, I've got price info from $150-$800. What is a fair price?

Have you checked recent Ebay sales? I have no idea because I don't follow Yamaha gear as far as resale. You could post a question at audiokarma.com since they are more into vintage Yamaha than most here. If I had to guess a starting point maybe $175-200, but I really have no idea.

Right now on Audiogon there is a M60 posted at $300 obo and an M80 posted at $500 but it has been there 22 days. Both prices seem high to me, but there are a lot of Yamaha fans out there.

Also a Yamaha MX1000U which, IIRC is higher up the food chain according to Yamaha fans for $500

With the limited access I have to the web here at work, I found one for $180 that sold on e-bay, and I see another that had an asking price of $600, that is listed as sold in a random audio forum. Now whether he got 6 for it is another thing, but thats what he was asking. Both are recent sales (within the last 2 months)

That's one thing you have to watch for, is the date when pricing. Yes - you may find people selling them for 800-1000, but that might have been back in 80's when this thing came out. Frankly, I think that $600 was pretty ambitious.

Anything over $300 is ambitious. I might add since the OP is selling to a Polkie it's poor form to post the price you paid then jack it way up to resell it. It's not a "rule" but is considered poor form to do that. The flea market is for members and generally the idea is to pass a long a good deal rather than trying to maximize profit or sell it at "market" price when you paid beans for it. IIRC the Op bought the amp and a pair of SDA's for $200 or $250. Seems unfair to sell it here to another Polkie for more than about $150-200 based on what he paid..............again this isn't Craigslist or Ebay.

Just a word about that.......as our FM isn't like Craigslist or Ebay.

heiney9, I understand and I'm not trying to take advantage of a Polkie. This fell in my lap, I had know idea what this amp was worth nor do I now. As for the price to another Polkie, I sent him a PM stating I would sell this at 80% of market value. I'm new to this club and love it! I'm not looking to use it to make money, I have a job, this is just for fun.

I sort of sensed that you weren't taking advantage, but I just put it out there. It's still your sale and you can do what you want. I'm not saying give it away for nothing because it does have value, but use our FM experience as a guideline. I hope you do stick around and participate.

    Good luck

    Cayuga,

I'm interested in the Yamaha M-85 that you have. Are you still trying to sell it?

    Thanks,
