SDA listening position

Been a while. Hope all are well.

I reconfigured my main room and followed the setup guidelines for my 1.2TLs, but the SDA will not cooperate. Currently they are 75" apart (tweeter to tweeter), 24" from the side walls (room just isn't wide enough for 36") and 9" from the back wall. My seating position is 75" away. This gives me a soundstage that slightly extends beyond the speakers and little depth. However, if I sit in the back of the room about 135" away from the speakers (2' from the back wall), the soundstage is huge and has much more depth.

So what is the normal course of action here? There's no way to get the 36" side clearance and moving them closer together isn't an option either (Plasma is in between them 8" back from the baffles). They are spiked and perfectly squared up to each other and the room boundaries.

The overall dimensions of the room are: 18.5'L x 12.3'W x 8.5'H The long walls can't accommodate the placement of speakers and still allow for all the equipment and furniture to be placed properly, so only the short wall is available.

Any advice is appreciated.

That's what I've been doing, but the spot isn't the best for long sessions.

I really wonder why the sweet spot with my setup is so far back.

I've also noticed that the average couch and chair height keeps your ears about 9" below the main tweeter. Do they expect people to sit on stools or build platforms to raise their couches/chairs?

If the tweeter is ever so slightly above your listening level I feel it doesn't matter much. Just think about how the SDA's are not toed in. In most situations you are more than 30 degrees off axis, and a lot of times you are more than that in a proper setup. I wouldn't worry much about that small a difference.

Sounds logical. I seem to remember someone mentioning they sat on a phonebook when listening to get up to the right height.

I think next week I'm going to remove all the furniture from the room so only the speakers and electronics remain. I'm then going to recheck the sweet spot to see if it changes. If it does, I'll have my answer. If it doesn't, I will make the sweet spot in the back of the room more comfortable and live with it until I end up in a place with proper measurements for them.

If your wall is hard behind you you might want to consider putting up a heavy blanket behind you for a test. I am up against the back wall and I have put cushions behind me to help with reflections. I have heard several SDA setups and those with a large open area behind the listener sounded best. Room treatments would go a long way for you. Also seriously consider first reflection point treatments on the side walls. Those two treatments would go a long way IMHO.

The results you are getting is because you have the speakers on the short wall. I realize that the long wall will not work for you, but that is where they should be.

I really wish I could use the long wall, but both long walls have openings in the wrong places, so no matter how I set them up, one would be in a doorway or they would be off center.

I'm in no way disappointed by the sound as they are, so I can live with it until a better place happens. So for now I'll sit naked on a barstool in the back of the room drinking and listening.

Agreed, the big boys like 16-18' or more to insure 3' to the side walls and then even more depth so your sweet spot can be arranged at just 1/3 of the way back from the speakers, so we are talking about approximately an 18 X 30' room.

Not being facetious, the sound of brgman's 2B's (or my SDA 2B TL's if he wasn't serious ) would solve your dilemma and blow your mind in your particular listening space.
