60-80 Watt Overachievers???????????

edited January 2011 in 2 Channel Audio
I have a Rotel RB-960bx 60watt amp that is really unbelievable!

Dual mono with dual transformers, dual rails ect.
I have hooked up some 2 ohm car speakers to this amp (Atoll digital pre w
Burr Brown 24/96) and it POUNDED them, some excellent sounding 4 Ohm MB Quarts 6x9's in boxes, NHT M6's, ect!
It will make some large 8 ohm speakers SING with some volume (Polk RT-10's).
Truely a STEAL for the money.
Strereophile reviewed it and it measured something like 180-200 watts stereo into 2 ohms with no problem!
I would NEVER sell it, as it just performs way beyond its price range.

I have already installed a Hubbell 3 prong Hospital grade plug on it, but I am wanting to upgrade the Zip cord power wire to some Neotech solid core and Furutech FI-11Cu male, but need to do some more research first.

Any 60-80 watt OVERACHIEVERS that you have used in the past?

NAD 214 comes to mind (had one but sold it :frown:).

If you forget the "zero" after the 8? Radii 8 watt tube amp. Blew away up to a 375 watt amp in many aspects including thump.

Watts, Schwattz. They mean nothing in the world of audio.

1 watt alone can earn your card. It's all in how you play it.

I recently connected a very old Museatex STR-55 amplifier at a buddy's house. Rated at 50 watts per channel it destroyed his Pioneer SC05.

    Hitachi HMA-7500 MKII.

Neat little amp with meters to boot. And just using a real powerful single pair of old school Hitachi MOSFETs. Dual Mono design with one transformer for each channel. Weight about 45-50LBs for 75WPC old school power. Output stable down to 2 ohms at 4 ohms settings. Oh yeah, there is a push button to switch between 4 ohm and 8 ohm speaker load. Real Cool Sleeper Amp. If I hook them up behind ML Amps and play them, you would think the ML is playing.

Yeah, they are that good. Price? About 2 peanuts. Aha...Good Luck searching another one for that.

    kenwood_ka-9100.jpg

I had a Kenwood KA-9100 integrated amp for a bit back in the 80's. Built like a tank and pumped out some nice sonic goodness.

    Should never have sold it....

nope watts mean nothing to get the card you need to spend at least 8grand on your amp. To get the gold card you need at least a 10 grand tube pre-amp:biggrin:
