I got the wife a netbook that has Windows 7 starter. Anyone tried upgrading to 7 Home Premium? Apparently, a lot of programs don't run on the starter. The netbook as 1 gig RAM and is like 1.8 gHz with 250g storage.

thanks

Yeah, starter is limited to (I think) 4 programs running at once. That netbook is definitely an over-powered netbook, and would be better suited with Premium on it.

You can either do a format and install (I recommend) or you can do an upgrade. They sell both types.

    I don't believe you can run a full W7 w/1G of ram.

You can. I'm running Windows 7 Premium (x86) on my wife's 1GB/1.8Ghz 5yr old laptop right now. It does fairly well.

Granted you'll get a much smoother ride with 2GB+, but it's definitely doable with 1GB.

I had seen recommendations for 1 gb, but apparently not essential. I am not sure what programs will not work with 7 Starter....e.g., Adobe Photoshop.

I did download the McAfee Security Essentials and had no problem with that.

thats weird - i'm running win 7 starter on a few of our laptops with no issues whatsoever. Infact for no frills comp use, i really don't see any reason to both upgrading to anything higher
