hey guys, had a question, my sister just purchased an HDTV, and would like to get a home theater. She does not want to spend more than $1000 and she wants to get one of those packages that come with the speakers and receiver. Can anybody recommend a setup? I never shopped around for one of these all in packages. I usally by my stuff piece by piece.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Dave

for $1000 she should really look into buying seperate components. Does she need a DVD player? If you have experience buying seperates, why dont you offer to help her pick them out, at that price point you can get a better value than a HTIB. This is of course my opinion.

Check out Crutchfield, they have some decent HTIB systems from Onkyo, Sony, Denon and JVC. For that price range I would suggest the all in one system. A couple have the DVD player built right in, can't get any simpler than that.

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Easy to bag a dd/dts receiver, a decent 5.1 speaker 'package', dvd source, and cables.

$1000 is PLENTY for a decent a rig.

    Cheers,

Absolutely, those all in one solutions just don't cut it. If you have experience in buying seperate components and can help her out, thats the way you should go. All in one systems are for lazy people, those who are adament about miniscule size, or those who just dont care about the sound. I built a killer system for under $1000:

    JBL ND-310
    JBL N-28
    JBL N-Center
    H/K AVR-310.

You could fit an entire HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) system in the enclosure of one of those ND-310's. With Dual 10" woofers in each cabinet, you really dont need a subwoofer.

Im not saying your friend should go for that system, because:
    1. The deals I got arent avail. anymore
    2. Those towers can be pretty imposing if she doesnt have a big room or doesnt care for them
    3. With speaker cable and interconnects (and a DVD player, you didnt mention whether or not she had one) this system will push her $1000 budget.

Regardless, it stands to show that HTiB is not the best value at the $1000 price point.
