Anybody ever heard of these guys?

http://www.6ave.com/shop/Home.aspx

I drove by the old "Kids R Us" in Deptford, NJ yesterday when I went to pick up my tires chains for my tractor. I don't think they are open yet. The lot looked pretty empty and there were dudes in construction gear still wandering around.

Anyway, never heard of them before. I remember a similarly named store that started out as a boutique kind of place up in North Jersey but I don't know if they are the same place. They are only in the NJ, PA, NY and DE areas so I'm guessing that most of you haven't.

However, the carry the entire Polk Audio line it seems. As well as Def Tech, Klipsch, Paradigm and KEF. Not exactly junk. They don't have any of the BS brands like Best Buy, hhgregg and Circuit City had/have. Well, except for Bose.

This could be a good thing since audio stores...well, electronics store in general, really. Stores like this that are worth a damn anymore are non-existent around here. We go from Best Buy to a massive jump in the "customer solution" realm with esoteric boutique shops selling stuff that costs as much as my house and staffing the business with arrogant snobs with prickish attitudes. Then they wonder why so many people buy online here.

Imma hafta go check out Sixth Avenue Electronics.

I've shopped there. Not a bad selection and competitive prices for brick and mortar stores.

I bought a Denon AVR from them several years ago. No problems.

I checked out the one in Delaware, Wilmington DE near the Concord Mall to be exact. They took over the building previously occupied by a Circuit City. I was happy to see that they carried the Polk LSi line, so that was a positive check for them. I was only there twice, but it seems like a decent store with some decent prices and sales. What's better (for me at least) is that DE has no sales tax and it's only about 15 miles from me.

I recall seeing them online every so often (over the past so many years) when I was searching for cameras and such, I recall they had a presence of B&M store primarily in NY (or North Jersey as you recalled), and my guess is that with the fall of Circuit City they decided to make an expansion move to local areas to fill the void since Best Buy would be the only comparable B&M in the area.

I also noticed some HHGregg stores opening in the area now and while I haven't had a chance to check any of them out, I suspect they are much the same type of electronics retailer.

    Always check here for starters:

    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Sixth_Avenue_Electronics_6th_Ave

I see them advertised on deal bargain sites and people's comment's are typically mixed. Never bought from them personally though.

They are on Polk's dealer list however:

We have few in Northern NJ. They are similar to Best Buy......the one in Paramus has several fairly nice listening rooms, and the prices are competitive. I've bought a few small things from them, but I'm more of an online shopper.

I bought my Denon 1610 from them. Best place for Denons and highly recommended site on AVSFORUM. I would buy from them again with no hesitation.

They always have decent deals on good gear.

I would put hhgregg a step above Best Buy. They offer good selection and if you wait you can pick up nice stuff on a great deal (like my Panny Plasma I got over the summer!) but they aren't much to write home about. This Sixth Ave Elec. looks to be more along the lines of Bryn Mawr S&V/Tweeter was but without the "high end" room (which really was some high end stuff even if it was the low side of the market).

I think they started in North Jersey. Seems the NNJ sites are the oldest locations and the 6ave.com domain name traces back to an NJ provider and an NJ based owner entity with a whois search.

I've bought online from 6th avenue many times. They've always shipped the same day, and double boxed. Check Google for coupons, they almost alway offer something.

Promo code AFL4COUPON will get you 4% off right now.

I bought from them last year for my A5's during their "Name Your Own Price" period. $250 a piece was perfect for brand new.

They really started on 6th Avenue in NYC (I think around 23rd street?). They have very nice midfi+ (and less) gear, and they often have competitive prices. They also have decent listening rooms (by today's standards). By me they do not carry Polk, since another local store does (Electronics Expo), but they do carry Def Tech, Paradigm, etc. I believe that the salesmen do work on commission, so expect some to apply some pressure, but I've usually walked away happy, and never had a problem with a return.

Below is my experience with them from a few months ago:

I ordered the Pioneer player last night for my father-in-law from 6ave.com via paypal and everything went through. Today I got an email from them saying my order had been canceled because my shipping address (work) was not confirmed in my account because it is different than my billing address (home); although my account is confirmed. I then asked about paying for the player a different way even though the paypal things is BS, but they had already sold out including the unit I had purchased. My next question to them was when were they going to refund my money since they canceled my order, and was told 3-5 business days...

So did you get the money back? I've found shipping to any address other than my billing address to be problematic. I've had issues with many online vendors trying that. I'm not sure if it's the vendor, PayPal, or Visa that screws it up.

I did get the refund after I called them three times.

The issues was with them as I didn't even have the option to "repurchase" the Pioneer player with my credit card. I just received a noticed that my purchase had been canceled, and when I contacted them to asked what the deal was, they were sold out...

6th Avenue is pretty good. Bought a few things over the years from them. One of the better brick and mortar big stores.

Big Dawg is right. 6th ave and 23rd street in the city. I am pretty sure that location has been gone for years though.

One of their locations near me has a nice McIntosh room. A few of their other locations near me have a pretty nice dedicated HT room too. Service varies by location though.

Well, I was told by a co-worker that what they have listed on the website is not all that they carry either. They have agreements with many vendors not to list items on the website so that they don't stomp all over the other regional stores.

I'm going to have to go check them out and see what the deal really is. They seem to have quite the long list of products so I'm not really sure how much more they can actually fit in the stores with limited space but it's worth a trip I suppose.

As far as service, this place is literally brand new. I'd imagine they'd be putting the best foot forward. I mean, I drove past the place on December 30th and there wasn't even a sign up, just a bunch of contractor looking vehicles in the lot and paper over the windows. Not even 2 weeks later, it looks like it's already open if not opening in a matter of days. I'm surprised there's been no mailer out about it.

I bought my Denon AVR from them and had no issues. They are certified from the manufactor for what they sell.

There return policy is very short if you do not like the item, I think 7 days.

If you are a member of AVS forum they will give deeper discounts.

Bought an SC-07 from them a couple years back during one of their 'Name Your Price' promotions.

I selected free ground shipping as opposed to the $45 overnight and still received it the next day! Granted...it was from NY to Boston, but you could say I was happy.

I bought my PSW 505 there with no problems what so ever. They called to verify that I made the purchase with the credit card, which I found reassuring as a way to prevent credit card fraud. Shipping was fast and safe. I would definitely shop there again.

I bought a few things from them when I lived in Jersey for a year about a decade ago. And they've had an online presence, as noted above, for a while.

Some good deals on close-out, clearance every so often. I forget what store we went to...the one closest to Madison...?
