Hey guys, new to the forums here, and to home theater systems as well.
A couple months ago, my cheap computer speakers died on me. I figured it was time for an upgrade, so I bought a pair of Polk Monitor 30 Series speakers online. While I thought I'd be able to hook them up to my Desktop with no problem, I now know that I need a receiver. I thought about just sending the speakers back, but I got them for a really good deal, so I feel like using them for a future home theater system.
I was wondering if anybody could recommend me a receiver, as I really don't know what to look for. All I know is that it needs an aux input or an RCA (red/white) input for my desktop, and the cheaper it is, the better (I'm a poor college student :eek:)

Really anything would work. Yahama, Pioneer, and Onkyo would be the brands I'd look at. NAD has some entry level receivers that I really like, but you aren't likely to find any at mass market electronic stores.
There is a large used market in receivers (www.audiogon.com and www.videogon.com) are places that specialize in used audio/home theater gear. Ebay obviously exists too..
If you can find a receiver in your price range with "Pre-Outs" (not merely a subwoofer pre-out), that is best because you can add a fancier amplifier down the road if you decide too. But that isn't necessary early on and depending on your price range you might not be able to find one with Pre-Outs..
I had a few entry level Onkyo's (around $300 new) and been happy with them.

To answer this, I thought that bookshelf speakers would be a good replacement for my old speakers, and I didn't realize that they were for a home theater system, I only saw that it was a great bargain and kind of leaped before looking so to speak. But now I'm interested in home theater equipment.
