Refinishing LSi7?

So I'm thinking about refinishing my LSi7, but have no idea what I'm doing and have some questions. The pair I'm thinking of refinishing are the cherry color, and basically I'd want to darken that up as much as I can.
Do the sides detach and re-attach fairly easily?
Are the sides real wood, or some composite material like mdf with a veneer on them?
I don't know squat about woodworking, would it even be possible to get these much darker with stain? I don't want to lose the grain of the wood, so I guess that means painting them is out.
My dad is an excellent woodworker, so I could get him to help me with the actual work, but thought I'd start by asking the above questions here first to see if it's even doable.

Real wood. There is a thread or two on here about removal. I think I recall reading that there might be two different methods of attachment.

Eh, looks like taking the sides off is hit or miss, I'll probably just avoid that and devise another plan.
