I have had a chub now for an hour straight from finally getting, hooking up, and listening to my new A9's. GOOD GAWD, what a difference from the 8's.

Running them off of a B&K ref with 200wpc.

These things just sound so.... BIG, and clean. Ran the auto EQ, set them to large and crossed over at 100, with a PSW505 to back them up.

If you are a new member here or new to audio and picked these speakers up, get an amp. Don't think about it, just do it. 200wpc minimum and WOW.

I can't wait to give them a nice music session, but for now, I will start breaking them in with the IIHF junior finals.

GO CANADA!!

    Both

    Bad Sick
    Good Sick

More bad though, I'm loving the sound, but I'm absolutely LIVID. Losses like last year are much easier for me to swallow than this crap.

How can you run them "Large" but crossover at 100Hz?

I don't know, but I can! I have got to read the manual again for my AVR for the exact number, but "large" lets me set the crossover level, and "small" is defaulted at.... not sure.

I am going to play around with the level when I have time though.

I could have missed something in the menus due to the rum and the limited time I had before the game (SOOO ANGRY!), so I'm going to check it all out tomorrow and figure out the best settings for my situation.

I feel like I am re-living the difference of going from the AVR to the amp with my RTi8's (almost 2 years ago).

I am confident that I will be able to go another few years now without a major upgrade to my primary system and can focus my efforts (and money) on my distributed audio and various renovation projects.
    right now I have...

    Drivetrain:
    RTi A9's (shwing!)
    CSi 5
    PSW 505

    rear axle:
    FXi A4's

    Engine/Transmission:
    Yammy HTR 6090 avr
    B&K ref 4420 (for the A9's)

    fuel:
    Digital Cable box
    PS3
    Xbox
    Pio Elite DV-79 AVI
    Thorens TD-316 with a Shure M97Xe
all running through an APC H-15 fuel filter.

The wheels/tires are all carpet on concrete and all driving controls run through a Harmony One. Driving conditions are always excellent with satisfying visibility looking through the 55" LG dlp windshield. Simply upgrading the drive shaft today took a solid second off of my quarter mile times.

Pix of my system will end up in the showcase when I get un-lazy. Keep in mind I haven't taken pix of my equipment in 2 years. (it is to be heard, not seen!) ... someday though.

Sounds like you happy with your choices. Good to hear! Very nice setup you have going on.

Take some time to do a little reading on what setting to cross those speakers over at; check the settings on your avr as well. Most avr's allow you to adjust the crossover on "small" setting. (not saying yours does and not saying that you are wrong) :)

For a starting point cross them at 80 (thx standard) and let the sub do the bass job. Next lower them down to 60 and see how that sounds.
I am going to mess with my setup today and will post my results/impressions in another post.
It sucked that Canada lost last night! :(

You can set your mains to large and still crossover the LFE to the sub at whatever value on nearly all AVRs. Onkyo offers you the Double Bass option sending LFE to the mains as well in Large config. HK it was LFE or LFE+Mains. I'm sure it's something similar with a Yammy.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

+1 I believe my Yammy 663 has LFE setting for SUB, BOTH, NONE. I think at first, when I was still using the amps in the AVR, I tried the BOTH setting to throw to the SDA/SRS2's mains and noticed a bit more bass , but there was also that huge SUCKING sound of the anemic power amp(realistically rated about 45 watts in the AVR trying to draw every last bit of current out of the power supply. Ended up getting external amps,Epik subs, problem solved:)

I feel your pain. That third period took epic failure to a whole new level. So then I watched my Canucks beat up on Calgary and maintain first place overall in the NHL and I felt much better. Sorry for derailing. Back to regularly scheduled posting.

isn't 100hz a little too high for them? I'd expect them to go way below the standard 80hz.

The auto EQ set the cross at 40 and LFE as "both". I just turned LFE to "sub" and cross to 100 and it sounded amazing. I am going to play around with it all someday. I have a feeling I'll end up with LFE on both and cross at 60 in the end.

Auto EQ also set my center and surrounds to "large" too.

To each their own, but I'd definitely try different crossover settings. At least down to the 60-80hz territory. Congrats on audio bliss though OP, enjoy the new toys.
