Is this a Pioneer trait or are my speakers a bit underpowered by this receiver?

fronts: Rti8

Not big into pioneer gear, but it sounds like your reciever does not have the proper juice to power these,,power ratings can be decitfull,, ive got a hk, low wattage that by brother in law is using to power his lsi7,s, and there 4 ohms,,, thats the first thing that comes to mind,, enough clean power,, could be wrong????
Not an Audiophile, just a dude who loves music, and decent gear to hear it with.

It's probably a calibration issue, and what do you consider "all the way up" ?

Volume is rarely because of lack of power, it's usually lack of calibration or user error.

Remember, 1w/1m will get you 90db on these speakers.

When or if you ran the auto calibration, it may have set the speaker level with a negative value, such as -3.5. Return those values to 0 and adjust to your liking.

"way up" as in about half way up before I start getting good audible sound and then 3/4s of the way gets me pretty good HT sound. I did the auto calibration with no obstruction in front of the speakers so my settings should be pretty good.

My room is an open floor plan but the listening area between the speakers isn't overly large (20x16 maybe) and the sound seems to encompass it nicely once turned up.

I checked the auto cal settings and they were about -1 to -1.5 but nothing substantial.

Don't you think you should check them ? It's not a failsafe system of calibration. If the values are set too low,you then have to turn up the volume more to reach a certain level, which is what you were complaining about.

I don't know your rcvr personally, but it sounds like you have the settings wrong somehow (I would double check all the settings), or something's wrong/broke with it? That scenario sounds weird.

That's normal. Volume on these receivers is logarithmic, not linear.
If you want it linear, there may be an option in your receiver to turn it from -db scale to the 0-100 scale.

0db is reference level, which would be considered "half way up" on an old analog receiver.

I have to go to -15 to get 'loud' on my HK 254. On my Yamaha 110w/channel I have to go to about -25 to get "loud".

    What you're describing is normal...

I have the same volume issues with the Onkyo TX-NR808 Receiver after I ran Audyssey MultEq. I have to keep turning and turning the volume control to get it loud. What is the fix for this? Also, I have read that some use the sound meter (such as the one sold at Radio Shack) to adjust there speaker volumes manually on the receiver. Would this be any better than running the Audyssey MultEq or is it a waste of money? THANKS Tavo

My 1120 does this too, I think it's a receiver trait. i even bought a 130 wpc amp and after re-calibrating it's not any louder, it just sounds better. When I watch cable I have it turned up to about -10 and it's not even that loud. When I play xbox or listen to music it's usually around -25.

i think that's a common trait with that type of volume control. with my yamaha, i watch movies at -10 and music at 0. i have gone as far as +3, but i really don't know what the max number is.
