M60 vs M70

Hello- I'm a newbie to Polkaudio forums!

I am sure this has been hit on many times already, but I am currently looking at the Monitor Series given the good discounts available. Mostly I am interested in some good information comparing the M60's and M70's.

I am newer to polk, but have had a well trained ear thanks to my father's audiophile hobby. I grew up listening to music and movies on his Thiel CS2's, he then expanded to a 5.1 dual zone system incorporating HSU, Snell, and Klipsch to round out the drivers. Having listened to the M60's at a local AV specialty store, I have decided this is a great steal of a deal and cannot pass it up.

Moving on...
I am looking at:
Monitor 60's Series II @ $218/pair with free shipping
CS2 Series II Center @ $99
PSW505 Subwoofer @ $199
while using my Infinity Primus 162's for rear channels (mostly for space limitation, and I already own them.)
All being driven by a mid-late 90's Sony ES receiver.

My main question is this, M60's @218/pair or M70's @398/pair.
I am currently still a college student with a limited budget, and I would suspect that after college I will be upgrading. At the very least- just the fronts- probably to something a bit more refined. Leaving the m's to be put back to surround duty.

I will be using for primarily HT, but also music.
Current room dimensions are: ~22' x 15' x 9'

Thanks for the help.
-Dave

Normally, if Newegg was having a sale on everything - I'd say go with the 70's. I can't say much about the 60's, but owning the 70's I think you'd be set for a while. Not saying you can't ever upgrade, but I don't think you will feel the urgency that you may think you'll have.

But, considering the same - I don't know if you can ignore the price difference. The 60's for 109 is a steal. Since you are using a sub, you may not even miss some of the lower end of the 70's. Hope that helps? Otherwise, it seems that these speakers go on sale every other week - so if you wanted the 70's I'm sure they will be on sale next week.

I do appreciate the info. From what I have read it may be a better idea to just go for the M70's as they have a much better components and a much better crossover.

Anyone else care to drop a couple cents, even a link to more info would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

I have M-70s myself and prefer them. But to tell you the truth, with that sub and M-60s being just a little over 100 a piece, and you being on a budget. I might just go with that for now, especially if you're more into the HT thing. You really won't hear the differences with the M-70s unless you're listening more to music in 2 channel?

Keep in mind Polk has a ebay site where they sell factory refurb gear. It has no flaws of any kind and is sold at a deep deep discount (not a massive factor for Monitor series, but for sure on the RTi and LSi's). They do still have a factory warranty, more info at the site.

You could get the same speakers for cheaper possibly, or also move into something like the RTi line as well.

Does anyone know if there is any major internal difference between the M70 and M70 Series II, or is it strictly cosmetic?

Newegg failed, but a competitor came through.. $169 per with free shipping on the better looking M70 Series I with the great Cherry Finish.
    I'll call that a success!

I bought the 60's and a CS10 (CS2 won't fit in my cabinet) for HT and music. I don't have a subwoofer yet. I thought the 60's were fine for HT but were quite a disappointment for music compared to the reviews I had read. Then I retired the 60's to another room and bought the 70's with the Newegg discount. To me the difference was huge, especially for music but also for HT. Perhaps a subwoofer with the 60's would sound great for music, but I don't have any personal experience on that one. For me the 70's are a big step up.

    Good luck!

I am glad I went with the M70's and I haven't even heard them yet!
it seems to me that the M60's are like the little brother that just can't keep up with the M70's.

You did good. And I agree, after all I spent a lot of time, a few years ago, listening to all three towers before going with the 70s.

    You'll like them!

    Enjoy!

Mind if I ask where? I am also in the market for these and was waiting for newegg to drop its price.

    Thanks
