Maybe not physically but bigger storage with 27000uf at 63v.Those appear to be 15,000uf at 75v?

What amp? That chassis looks similar to an old Belles I salvaged a few years ago.Except for the two sets of inputs binding posts yours appears to be a mono bloc but the chassis could also be used for a stereo version.

Big caps really mean nothing and it's been the practice of high end designers to use as many as a a dozen smaller caps instead of two large caps.

Since you are asking my amp has (12) 10,000uF @ 63v for total capacitance of 120,000uF. I'll take my 120,000uF of filter capacitance over two large cans that most likely provide less than 1/2 that. Big **** caps (as in size) are out as there are better ways today to provide filter capacitance.

Yep, love big caps like that for x-over and coupling :tongue:. Actually I think big caps (in size) are cool no matter where they are.

    Because they're for different applications.

I believe I explained myself in the first post, also for FACE's post they are a different application, and I do think big **** caps "look" cool in gear, but they aren't the best for that application anymore.

I didn't contradict myself as far as big **** caps "looking" cool, just they are.......as you put it meh for filter applications in todays gear. Much better ways to implement them.

So does that explain it and make it less comical?

While physically big the capacitance is not huge at what appears to be 15,000 uf each and it looks like they have provisions on the power supply board to add two more in paralllel. Those big cans are typical for that era and they took up a lot of real estate.Whereas nowadays due to improved manufacturing methods a modern ' lytic' of the same value might be 1/3 to 1/2 the physical size allowing for more to be used should the designer wish.

The "mine is bigger than yours" concept sure seems to abound here at CP.Why?
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

In fairness I don't think the OP was intending to be in the crowd of "mine is bigger than yours". In my posts I was merely pointing out to the OP that currently many smaller caps in unison is the way many are being done today. Partly because it is a better way to go and partly because of advances in cap design and manufacturing (as FTVG pointed out)

If he was then he is a putz :smile::tongue:.

No kidding. What's so wrong with posting the inside of your gear? I'd like to see under the hood of as much stuff as possible so I know what I'm getting for my money.

My GF mentions that your caps are bigger than mine and looking at them in envy. This is so not right.
