Song gets played on radio stations, and some stations ban it due to protests.

The group ? Bloodrock.
The song ? DOA.

There was never an outright ban on this song, but there was a "deep-six it" move on the more mainstream rock stations.

Why ? Seems kind of funny ?/disturbing ? now to think of the discomfort the mainstream media had with this song.
Back in 1964 the state of Indiana banned the song ” Louie Louie” because they felt that it had some sexual content in it.
DOA doesn't have any sexual content in it. It doesn't promote the overthrow of any established order. It doesn't promote drug use. It doesn't encourage rebellion/sedition/treason.

Yet ..... ?

Here's the song, with lyrics:

To paraphrase Walter Cronkite, "And that's the way it was".

I had that album back in the 70's. It is a little uncomfortable to listen to, but not without
some musical merit. Interestingly, I got it after hearing that song on the
radio - there was one decent radio station in our area then that would play things that
others wouldn't - like King Crimson and Zappa, for instance.

They were pretty popular down here in Texas at that time. Maybe they weren't so known in other states. Definitely remember people had the 8 tracks of their first and second albums in their cars.

I remember that tune. They use to play it all the time on KAAY, Little Rock, Arkansas. I think the name of the program was Beaker Street, hosted by Clyde Clifford. I never heard it on any other station.

KXOK 630 AM in St. Louis played it all the time back then. I was 11 years old and I bought the 45 rpm from the Ben Franklin 5 and dime, no questions asked by the store clerk. The song was cool but spooky, but I bought it anyway.

I can see why it was pulled,

Mainstream people don't want to hear about their mortality. They probably flooded the stations with upsetting calls.

I listened to the whole song and thought it musical and dreamy like an out of body sort of way. I wasn't repulsed at all.

I've never heard of them or the song but If I see CDs/albums somewhere, I'll pay a buck or two to hear the rest of their works.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

That song takes me back. Haven't heard it in decades. I can't imagine why they would ban it. Thanks for that treat.

DOA wasn't the cutting edge of ..... well, anything but there was this "Well, that's just not RIGHT !" attitude towards it. And that's what's strange. What "IT" was was .... heck, I don't know. I don't think anybody did. But the fact that "They" didn't approve of it gave it a boost up in the "Gotta hear" category.

Wasn't like it was ground-breaking like, say .... Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". Although in both songs people were always "guessing" what the song/lyrics meant, etc.
"Dude, they're saying, 'In the Garden of Eden !".
With DOA it was "Dude, they're talking about getting stoned and driving and .....".

This song came to mind because my oldest son watched the DVD, "Repo Man The Genetic Opera" (one of the most gawd awfulest movies in the history of creation :frown:). One of the little blurbs in there was one of the main characters semi-constantly singing, "I Remember !".

.... which triggered some neurons way back in the memory stack of the lead singer of Bloodrock with this refrain , "I remember".....

.... which got me to thinking about this song. It definitely had an optional listening mode of "altered states".

DISCLAIMER: In no way, shape, or form will I be held responsible for any physical or mental damage that occurs from anyone renting "Repo Man The Genetic Opera" based upon the mention of same in this post.

....although, if one were to rent "Repo Man The Genetic Opera", watch it with the sound down while listening to Gwar's "Saddam A Go-Go" on continuous loop ....... Sal may be on to something there !

    .... or on something. :wink::smile:

I played for my family, and got a rousing thumbs down. I enjoy it. I suppose it's because I listened to it back in the 70's and it brings back memories.
