fixed or variable

Hi guys, When does the terms fixed and variable come into play when setting your audio to be used and your tvs' speakers are not.These terms have confused me to no end. When I use my tv it's own spkrs are off and my Klipsch500 set do the audio. So what is f/v and when or which is used.
