how to set speaker to small?

HI

i am trying to get my system setup properly. I read a few suggestion here for setups similar to mine is to set font speakers to "small", but my receiver does not have this option. What should i do?

I have Onkyo 707, and my setup is in my sig. My room is 14x17x9

Currently my setting is: all speakers volume set at -1db and cross over 80hz THX. Using LFE for sub. Also, for the sub, i set 0 phase, volume and frequency at 10 o'clock.

Is this the right setting?

I don't own Onkyo but the cross over setting is correct. On my pioneer after mcacc (Audissey), wrote down my mcacc defaults and the adjusted the speakers individually and with different music modes and sources locking my favorite settings to each genre so I could select which one later.

Any setting aside from "full range" is "small". It just isn't labeled as such. The reason that many manufacturers suggest setting to "small", is because older AVR's generally only had one preset eq point to set speakers to. Thus, the setting was either large or small. Newer AVR's have multiple EQ points to set your speakers to though, so setting them to any point other than full range(large) is considered "small".


I'm assuming that the subs crossover point is set in the AVR. If that's the case, turn the subs internal EQ all the way up, to avoid double filtering the signal.

Do you mean the crossover control on the sub itself? The AVR is taking care of the sub(LFE) crossover point, and when using the LFE input on the sub, the subs internal crossover should be bypassed. However, to make sure you're not double filtering the signal, you should turn the subs internal EQ all the way up. This gives you some cheap insurance, and guarantees you that the subs internal EQ is out of the signal path.

The only proper setting for the LFE channel is 120hz. A Dolby spec'd soundtrack has LFE information all the way up to 120hz, at which point there is a brickwall filter. Many people will suggest that you try 80hz...but 120hz IS the correct setting for a subwoofer in a HT system.

I've generally found that 120hz on the LFE channel, with an 80hz crossover point on all the other speakers works best. It can vary depending on your setup and personal preference, but that would be a good starting point. If you've got large floorstanding speakers up front, you might find a 60hz crossover point on the fronts to sound better. Likewise, if you have smaller satellite speakers, you may find that a 100hz crossover point will sound better. Just play around with different settings to see what sounds best.
