Free Denon receiver, with a catch

So I got a free 1909 today because it shuts off and a red light comes on when you turn it on. I pulled off the cover and checked the fuses, and all I can tell is a clicking sound comes from the right side when it shuts off. Does anyone have any ideas of something I can try? I don't mind spending a little because it was free, if it's a lost cause i'll just drop it off at goodwill or give it to someone who wants to mess with it. Thanks for the help guys.

    Hmm, could be a short?

I know my old Denon receiver had some sort of relay that when powered on, would click on after 3 seconds or so which then turned on the internal amp.

It's just a shot in the dark but something worth checking. Gl fixing it, otherwise I'll be interested in doing it myself.

I know absolutely nothing beyond how to pull off the cover, look at the fuses, and do a reset on it. Those didn't work so now i'm stumped.

Like I said, I would assume it's a short somewhere inside from the speaker out's.

I'd follow the path (from binding posts) and check to see if there's anything out of the ordinary. Maybe something came lose (cold solder joint), or a bad cap (swollen most likely), burnt resistor or something of the sort.

Did the receiver have a problem with one of the channels prior to this? Maybe a channel was going bad/sounded weak compared to the rest?

The girl i got it from said she had it in a glass enclosure without ventilation and it overheated, it was working perfectly fine before that. Now it just turns on for a sec, clicks, and turns off with a red light. I have the cover off and looked around but I don't know what to look for and didn't see any obvious issues.

I'll take it to a repair shop, if it's less than $100 bucks i'll fix it and if not i'll go with the hammer or give it away.

A friend of mine had the same exact problem with his Sherwood Newcastle. It was out of warranty but he contacted Sherwood and they fixed it for $25 + shipping. They said that they replaced a condenser (capacitor) but I am not sure where. You may want to contact Denon.

I'll give them a shout, if i'm only in this thing $25 + shipping i'll definitely hold onto it. When I picked it up I decided if I can fix it for under $100 it'd be a pretty safe investment. Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Is this the reset that you tried?
    1) Turn the power pressing and releasing the power button
    2) Press the power button and simultaneously press the SPEAKER A button and the SPEAKER B button
    3) Wait for the display to start flashing at intervals of about 1 second and then release the buttons.
Also, these things are prone to overheat and so have protection circuits installed. The problem may be as simple as a failed fan that results in the unit shutting itself off for protection. Look at the fans and see if they spin when it powers up.
    Good luck.
