from what i'm reading here, it looks like the 1120 is junk. is this true? everything else i've read on it, said it was a very good receiver.

In my short experience my impression is that it's a great sounding home theater experience with subpar power but I can't say the lack of power adversely affected the two movies I watched portions of 'Up' and 'The Dark Knight'. My verdict is still out on whether I'm keeping it but I wouldn't call it junk necessarily.

I'm a car person and if I had to describe it like a car I would say it's a great handling car that's lacking in power.

    So, it's a Miata?

It's not junk. You just have to understand what it is. It's a $500 receiver.... Treat it as such.

Few receivers will offer what this receiver offers for its' price. I do not expect a $500 receiver to output its' rated power unless it's a Harman Kardon that is rated at 30w/channel or so, or a Marantz rated at 50w/channel. Even then you'd be hard pressed to find a 7.1 channel of either, new in that price range.

Yes that was my exact thoughts even though a Lotus pops into my mind on occasion but that might have too much power.

Though my reaction was knee jerk last night as I was taken back by the tin can sound and lack of volume coming from my speakers my search for good sound from music is not over with this receiver. Oh and no I wasn't completely surprised by this because as mentioned by others the power rating by Pioneer for this receiver is surprising higher than it should be.

Do remember I'm coming from an H/K 635 that produced beautiful music with loads of power but a very mediocre home theater experience.

Fair enough, but as others have said, it's still a 500 buck receiver. I had the same problem with thin sound in music playback, compared to my old B&K307. So much that I almost put it back up for sale. Try different cables, set the speakers to large, try the different playback modes. If it's still not for you, move on to something else, not a biggie by any means.

I had the same experience with my 1019... Wasn't impressed with the music at all. The Yamaha I have that replaced it, which is 10 years older sounds MUCH better in music. It was probably lack of setup, but oh well. I didn't get the 1019 to keep anyways.

As of now I'm considering a Marantz sr5004 or a comparable model in the $560 range.

It was a synergy thing for me. Switching receivers, I replaced IC's with shorter ones and my amp said, " UH, excuse me..." Once the old cables were put back in, the sound I liked came back. Don't under estimate the importance of cables/synergy in your system. I always try and tweek a piece to get it to play nice before booting it down the road. Thing is, I knew going from a 3500 buck receiver to a 700 buck one was not going to yield the same results in music playback, but I got it close. My Butler amp helped out in large to this, which again, if you don't have preouts, your stuck.

I know it's a little late, but the bench for the 1120-k is available now on HTM (unfortunately I cannot link to it due to my firewall not allowing me access from here)

But... testing is showing with 5 channels its about 47 wpc, and with 7 its about 39 wpc

Who did the bench? If I can find it I'll link it.

Just goto the Home Theater Magazine site, and search for 1120-k. I found it online at home, but at work, I can't even get Google to return HTM in a search.

Grrr. What else am I supposed to do at work? Sheesh.

There isn't a review for the 1120, just the 1019 on HTM....

I can't say either way at this point, but here is what I found on AVS forums as well.. "January, Home Theater Magazine tested the 1120 @ .1%, five channels driven, 47watts/ channel"

If nobody finds it by the time I get home, I'll post it. I was able to find a bench on the 1120-k though, just not having any luck now.

You guys are really splitting hairs here. You really going to worry about 10 or 20 watts one way or another ? Then ask why your speakers sound lacking in 5 or 7 channel mode ? Or if it's enough to drive big floorstanders ? C'mon, thats why it's important to have preouts gents. For midline receivers, the power dip between 2 channel and 5 or 7 channel is no big news, we have stated this over and over. Every receiver, coupled with associate gear will have a certain sound quality that appeals to you. Once your set on it, and you have preouts, the rest is mute. The bigger the speakers, the more power you'll need, you add an amp, and away you go until the next upgrade bug bites. HT doesn't have to be rocket science.

Agree with tonyb.....you cant cheat physics E=mc squared

I would be hesitant to go with a marantz 5004 because I read reports on users having reliability issues compared to the 003 series

The pioneer 1120 is a dam fine preamp with hdmi 1.4 and has nice dacs inside .If it was me I would buy a 3ch amp and use the receiver for my surrounds and you have a awesome HT rig for not alot of money
