LSi15: disconnect woofer???

My HT has Lsi15 upfront and my subs are co-located next to each speaker. I have to run the subs at a 180 phase. I noticed on the Lsi15 schematic that the "woofer" is wired 180 out from the mid/tweeters.
Now, I was wondering if anyone has disconnected the woofer connection from the crossover and running it in a pseudo "Lsi9" type mode. I would suggest that my subs are more than adequate to handle the low end (twin Empires).
I will just say that after many hours of using REW I have noticed that the Lsi15 and my room are a tad difficult to fine tune. I need to have the Lsi15 set to full and the remaining speakers at 60Hz. Otherwise I have a few cancellation spikes. For giggles, I installed a set of my old RT7 , set every thing to 80Hz and the curves were smoother. I suspect that side firing woofers (~2' from side wall) are interacting with the room. Due to room restraints and prior measurements, the speaker/subwoofer locations are set.
Room treatments are in place but not extensive.
Any comments or suggestions. I have been a Polkie for many years but I am considering jumping ship at this time. Nothing against the Polks at all, just looking for the large cost/low improvement result we all aspire to:biggrin:

Bad idea.
What happens exactly when you cross the LSi15's over at 60hz? Have you tried other frequencies? And there's nothing wrong with having to set your other subs for 180* phase."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
I forgot to add that I am using Audyssey with Dynamic Eq set. When I set the Lsi15 to full I also have double bass on which actually helps smooth the graph. If I set the LSi15 to 80 Hz, I have a sharp dip at ~90Hz (~42db) from reference(75db) that is absent when in full mode. The next lowest is @87Hz:54db.
When set to full/dbl bass the 90Hz dip is now at 70 db and the dip at 87hz:69db. Running the subs alone show do dip "spikes" and slopes off as expected. I suspect the room node is at play hear. As I mentioned I set up a pair of RT7 as a quick test set all speakers at 80Hz and did not see the significant dip as I did with the Lsi15.
I did not save the graphs from the RT7 nor did I change the sub phase to 0 from 180 for these. When I have some more time I will re-run these tests and see if they are consistent. I only asked about discounting the woofer because I have considered going LSi9 in the front to allow a little more placement freedom due to my screen width/height in the front. -
You realize the LSi15's woofer plays up to 150hz, right? Crossing your subs that high would sound awful.
If you bypassed the mid's high pass, they would play a little lower, but the cabinet is not tuned for those frequencies and I would have no idea what it would sound like.
Have you swapped the L & R LSi's? I'm curious if that would make a difference in your setup."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
Thanks Face..I will try swapping them as well during my next test attempt. I am trying to resist the temptation to upgrade the system ( I heard a friends B&W setup and it sounded nice..then again he paid much more).
Actually I am more disappointed in the center channel LSiC which seems rather thin or weak to me. I suspect I may try the XO upgrades to that unit first.
Actually my system sounds overall pretty damn good, but as most of us I will always be looking to improve something. I can live with the current settings, but I was just curious if anyone tried this mod.
Stay Tuned... -
I have to agree with you on the LSIC. It's definitely lacking and struggles to keep up with the 15's. I have my gain on the center set 4-6db higher just to have clear dialog.
I find myself moving the 15's depending upon what I'm listening to. For music I move them about 18" from the back wall, which really smooths out the bass. -
My 15's are 20" from the back wall and 15-23" angled from the side walls. One thing I can tell is that when I run a REW sweep (2-160Hz) with the LSi15 set to full, there is a definite ultra low freq rumble vs having the 15's set to 40Hz and above. Moving them around a little yielded very little difference in the plots. I expect that at the lower freq wavelengths. I am still scratching my head but can't do anything about it until next year ;^)
