That tube in the front is whats really neat, I have a friend that has an old warship radio from world war two that has that same tube on the front. Its purpose is to show positive tuning of the stations, it has a narrow glowing green feild at the bottom of it and when the signal begins to increase the feild begins to sweep up to the right and the left until it meets at the top to reflect a strong signal. I guess you could call it an early v.u. meter of sorts.
