    The history of God.....pretty interesting if you can get past the author showing off her vocabulary in every other sentence.

    Finsihed Dean's book a couple weeks ago... ehhh... one of those one themers stretched to 250+ pages.

    Started checking out Milton Friedman's Free to Choose: A Personal Statement. Disappointing... premises Milty laid out early-on as facts are really just his opinions... weakened the work considerably.

    Found a much better read in Joseph Ellis' American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic. Very lively accounting of the years of thought and work and politicing to write and ratify our Constitution. A surprisingly siginficant number of the discussions we are having today are simply rehashes of those joined 230-ish years ago...

    A VERY disappointing book from one of my favorite authors....

    As part of a collecton of short stories Brin published a novella, "Thor Meets Captain America"... an alternate-history story in which the **** win WWII by enlisting the aid of the Norse gods (except for Loki, who assists the American resistance). It was an excellent piece of sci-fi. "The Life Eaters" is both a prequel and a continuation of that story line. He should have stopped at the novella....:frown:

    I just finished reading "Dewey, The Library Cat that touched the world."

    Story about a kitten who found a good life after being nearly frozen inside the book return at the Spencer Library in Spencer, Iowa.

    Tear jerker at the end but a good read for my family. :smile:

    I'm halfway thru 'The Underground Empire' James Mills, at 1200pages of very small print, should keep me busy, an extremely good read if you like to bash the government for the lying, cheats that they are! :cool:

    Just finished The Road to Reality (Penrose) and almost done
    The Princeton Companion to Mathematics (Gowen).
    About 1/3 of the content is over my head despite having been a mathematic major for the first year
    or two of college many years ago, but there's a lot of good content despite that.
    Not recommended without a strong math background.

    Next is some fun reading:
    The Curse of the Wolf Girl (Martin Millar)
    [I really liked "Lonely Werewolf Girl" and I hope the sequel is enjoyable as well]

    then there's:

    The Elegance of the Hedgehog (Barbery, Anderson)
    and
    Cutting for Stone (Verghese)
    when my wife gets tired of her Kindle and lets me read those two.

    Just finished Moneyball by Michael Lewis. Apparently I paid attention. The Mariners called for a foolish double steal during last nights game and I found myself swearing uncontrollably at the radio. Well done Mr. Lewis.

    One Second After

    Phenomenal read on the projected effects of an EMP attack on the US. And it is based in a town that I passed through daily when I lived in NC, so I knew the terrain/geography he referred to intimately.

    Great read, but one of those that will have you wondering "is my disaster prepardness kit robust enough?"

    I picked up a re-tread last night. I finally unpacked all my books a couple weeks and have been spending time organizing them better than they are now. I found my copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Trilogy (all 5 books!) and started reading them again.

    The Secrets of Inchon. Couple days ago I read Jarhead.

    I can do fiction if there's a screen involved (giant gorillas/Empire State Bldg), but when it comes to reading I can't do make-believe.

    Alive. The story of the plane crash in the Andes mountains. They made a movie about it years ago and I remember watching it when I was a little youngster (not sure why though thanks mom!:wink:) Anyways, saw it again recently and wanted to read up more about it. The book reveals so much more of the tragedy, a must read!

    Need to add this one to the list... I'm becoming a big fan of his.

    Just finishing up my 2nd M. Lewis book, Liars Poker. Not nearly as good as The Big Short, a great book, but then it was his first effort, 20+ years earlier. Where the latter chronicled what should have been the death of the Mortgage bond market, the former chronicled its birth.

    Having always been a great fan of James Herriot's books, I've found another vet author that's good. His name is Nick Trout and the first one I read was "Tell Me Where It Hurts". I enjoyed it and am currently reading another titled, "Love Is The Best Medicine". If you enjoy dog stories, you might enjoy these.

    Stephen Hawking; The Grand Design. Just finished it last nite. Alot of quantom theory, actually some pretty amazeing concepts in this book although it is a bit dry but very interesting. The man is a deep thinker. All in all a good book if you like if you like reading about universe. And our place in it.

    Lawrence Krauss; The Physics of Star Trek. First let me say i'm no trekky. I just like science. Very interesting book if you want to know difference between science fiction and science fact. This stuff facinates me. Check out his youtube video; The universe from nothing.

    The other day I roamed across...

    Dangerously Funny : The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour by David Bianculli

    I had, and still have, three of their LP's. I'm old enough to remember the series, but was young enough to not fully understand what they were up to.

    The book started kinda slow (early-life, bio stuff), but has gotten really good through Season 1.
