"The journey, not the arrival, matters; the voyage, not the landing."

Theroux has written several travel books in addition to a slew of fiction. Not your typical travel writer and an aquired taste I suppose. If you are familiar with Bill Bryson, Theroux is a lot like him...only grumpier. In 1979 he rode trains from Boston to Esquel, a town in the northwest of the province of Chubut, in the Argentine Patagonia. As the quote alludes to...where he was going to was pretty much irrelevant...it was the traveling that mattered. So far a good read.

I've turned to the short stories/novellas of our own, "beloved", Herman Melville.

Bartleby, the Scrivener, Billy Budd, Encantada, Benito Cereno.

Highly recommended; an incredibly "modern sensibility" for their TIME!

    Steven King's 11/22/63

A lot of fun for someone like me who remembers it fairly well. Besides the JFK stuff, there's a lot of nostalgic memories in the story.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It is my favorite novel of all time. I have read it twice before but am now re-reading it for the first time in almost 10 years. It is one of the greatest novels of the 20th century...of any century. I have read all of Garcia Marquez' novels (I have even read some of them in the original Spanish) and One Hundred Years of Solitude is his masterpiece...and Love in the Time of Cholera is not far behind. What a writer!!

So far, it's been nice reading them after watching the shows. The shows seem pretty close to the book, at least so far where I am in the book. It has helped to keep track of the characters.

I've thought about listening to it on CD, but I think I would get too distracted by what I'm seeing while listening. And if I close my eyes while listening, I'll fall asleep LOL

If the reader is good and in this case he is very good you will not fall asleep. I get the CDs from the library for free. I printed out a list of the characters which helps me a lot.

The TV series gets very condensed as it continues.
