I found some Monitor 5's (that have been stored in their original box/packaging for most of their life per owner) on Craigslist..

Excited to grab and get to testing out my soldering skills on those Crossover's Doro so kindly shipped me..

I'll post some pictures once I get them in my hands later today =)

Just thought I'd share.. its always good to rescue good speakers from dusty closets..

Jason

Great find. What version of the 5's are they?

I recently picked up a Denon DRM-800A cassette deck from '91 that was bought by a church sat in its original packaging un used all its life. The foam packing had deteriorated and got sticky on the casing but other than that, perfect.

those are very early 5's. Pretty rare. They have peerless tweeters.

Double check those fuses and holders before making any conclusions, also swap the tweeters too. It could be the Xover, fortunately you have spares of them!

there anything special sealing these tweeters i should know about? I couldn't get the bad one to pop out.. They are old so might just be stuck due to age..

Just want to make sure there isn't some sealant I should know about before I start prying...

Should be only a very flattened foam gasket. you can remove the 6.5" driver and stick your hand in to push the tweeter out.:smile:

thats a good idea.. I might try that.. and there are 8 screws holding it down.. the center 4 are crazy tight.. those just attached to the tweeter housing underneath right? I don't want to unscrew those ones.. just the corner 4 holding it to the cabinet?

    Jason

P.S. I won't buy it now, I want to test the fuses and connections, but is this the right replacement if i need it?

Don't mess with the four inner screws !!! They hold things in place. If you can't find an exact match for your bad peerless, I guess those other ones might be good.

Nice speakers. In love my Monitor 5As...great for my small room.

If you need a new tweeter, I'd check the flea market in the forum for a matching used one...or pair for that matter.

As suggested, check the fuse and fuse connection. Be very careful not to overtighten and strip the screws...Larry hasn't made tweeter rings yet.

AND....Don't forget to post better pics when you get a chance.

That speaker you saw on ebay is a fake and not a Peerless replacement. It only looks like it. You would be better off waiting to find an original peerless. I have heard someone else talk about those tweeters but nobody has heard them yet.

How much did you pay for these?

If you are willing to pay that much for a copy how about getting the RDO-194 and doing a bit of woodwork. They will sound much better in either case.

I didn't buy them, was just curious about people's thoughts about the ebay peerless copy things, since they seemd a little weird.. I still need to test my fuses and connections

so, not knowing much about fuses.. i was gonna pick up another one to try on these tweeter when i go to find some deoxit..

the top fuse is the tweeter fuse right? (there are two fuses, i'm assuming these are definitely 5As?). the fuse has "250 Volt" and "BUSS ACC 1" on the ends..

anyone know more? or can i just wander into the store with the fuse and start looking? =)

    Thanks guys..

Don't not 194 them. Keep them Peerless. Tweeters will pop up. It is more than jsut fitting the new tweeters in the cabinets. You would need to mod the XO's also.

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.

I hesitate to suggest this but for testing purposes, you could temporarily jumper the fuse with a wire to check if the tweeter is working.

I rather just go buy a new fuse.. they seemed cheap when I looked online.. I need connection cleaner anyway.. and I'll have a couple extra fuses around. I forgot how small the binding posts were in the 80s lol.. WAY too small

    Jason

Dont jump and get new binding posts before you know the core composition of the binding posts on these speakers. They may be better quality than binding posts that comes with todays speakers.

Get your hands on the schematics and deffinetley perform some crossover mod work as a first step to bringing out the sound of these speakers!!!

If you plan to RDO the tweeters and perform crossover mods, find out what crossover modifications you need to do if you plan to use the RDO194 tweets. No sense on performing crossover modifications twice - unless you want to perform before and after comparisons between tweets.

I substituted all the house fuses with wire for the cold winter months. Works quite well!!! There are plenty of livingroom campfires for those cold winter days.

LOL... Oh, I don't know... the prying threat... your name...

However, your hesitation to jumping the fuse holder with wire gives me hope...

As said above, get the proper fuse. Start gently, then push it a little more and repeat as necessary. If a fuse blows, there's a reason it blew. We'll be here to help you troubleshoot it.

Also as said above the 5A is a nice little speaker. The Peerless is a great old tweeter. Try living with your new Polks a while as is... Plenty of time for modding, etc., down the road...

    Congrats on your find...

thanks, I just to see about getting the tweeter working.. get used to the sound, then start monkey'ing around with xover mods, etc..

I have some SDA-2's I want to mod the xover on too, but wanted to try something a little easier first before I tried the slightly more complicated SDA's..
