You need a karaoke machine.Main Surround -

A karaoke machine would make life easier. It has reverb and other effects to make the voices listenable and has a microphone feedback eliminator to eliminate squeeling from the speakers. Here is just a feedback eliminator http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHDSP110 but by the time you add some reverb and a mic you will have more in it than a dedicated machine.Vinyl, the final frontier...

It's not too advisable to use home audio speakers as a karaoke machine, or for any other kind of live sound. Live sound puts stress on speakers that recorded audio generally won't.The nirvana inducer-

Go to one of those Asian stores that sell all kinds of electronics dvd's/kareoke, etc. You should be able to find a kareoke dvd player with mic inputs w/adjustable volume control. They're not expensive. My parents got one while looking for a cheap dvd player. Check out China Town or something.
I know there are units that can take out the vocals off normal cd's. I don't know if these dvd players do that. If not, you'll have to buy kareoke discs. -

Live sound (if not manipulated) puts great stress on loudspeakers because of no dynamic range control, such as in the case with a microphone. Our pitiful audiophile speakers would not stand a pure square wave of any real amount of power for any length of time. Yet another reason the dynamic range is so compressed on all the recordings. Imagine a pop when you say a p word to close to the mic, or the frying of tweeters when you have a good long ssss word.Vinyl, the final frontier...

madmax basically sums it up in his post:Live sound (if not manipulated) puts great stress on loudspeakers because of no dynamic range control, such as in the case with a microphone. Pro audio speakers are designed to handle the stresses that live sound puts on them. That's not to say that you're necessarily going to damage your speakers by using them for karaoke, but the likelihood is quite high. It certainly won't do much to prolong the lifespan of your speakers, if nothing else. The nirvana inducer-

Mood altering substances... the real source of home audio danger...
Still chewing on the square wave, sibilence thing. Makes sense from standoint of clipping anywhere in the audio chain is a bad thing (even DAC's which I'd not considered before).
Sorry though, not buying the pro speakers are built to take it bit... Built to take the rigors, bumps and tumbles of the road sure, but sound damage protection has to be a product of the soundboard.More later,

The soundboard is a big part of it...and for that matter, your home audio equipment doesn't have the kind of protection circuitry that a live soundboard has.
Home speakers can't take the kind of audio abuse that live speakers can though. They simply aren't built to handle that kind of stress. I have a modest PA system, and for a long time I tried using home speakers on it. I used several different ones over time...some Technics 15" 3-ways, a couple different Cerwin-Vega's and some other various speakers. Without fail, I eventually blew the tweeters on every pair of home speakers I used in my PA system. I've got a pair of JBL pro speakers now that I've had for about 3 years, and I've thrown more volume at those things than I ever did at any of the home speakers I used with it, and I've never even had the remotest fear of blowing the tweeters. Being able to handle more wattage is a big part of it. Also notice that nearly all pro speakers use some kind of horn tweeter, and not dome tweeters. Horn tweeters in general are much more capable of handling ultra-high frequency harmonic overtones than a home audio dome tweeter can. I'm not a speaker designer, so I can't give you technical reasons. What I can do, is speak from my own personal experience, and from the accumulated experience of many of my friends who are also musicians(as am I). Home speakers simply aren't built to withstand the abuse that live audio can put on them. On the flip side though, pro speakers aren't capable of resolving as accurate of a reproduction of an audio signal as a good pair of home speakers.thuffman03 wrote: »How can you stand Karaoke? It's not really supposed to "sound good". It's supposed to be fun...which it is. It's fun getting up and making an **** of yourself with a bunch of your friends singing your **** off to cheesy **** songs.
I'll also add that chicks like a guy that will actually get up and make a fool of himself by singing some karaoke. It shows that you have a lot of confidence, and you're comfortable with who you are.The nirvana inducer-

did someone say karaoke? I think erniejade needs to impart some wisdom on this subject... :biggrin:design is where science and art break even.

Your level of fun at Karaoke is directly proportionate to the amount of booze consumed. I've really enjoyed me some karaokedesign is where science and art break even.

Most pro speakers can take a continuous square wave of massive power given the 800w to 1800w rms coil ratings. The suspensions are massive as well. When something breaks the whole mess explodes apart, not a quiet little pfft like audiophile stuff. :biggrin:Vinyl, the final frontier...

Never said they can't do subtle but that they must do blunt force. One doesn't necessarily negate the other.Vinyl, the final frontier...

A few months ago I bought some 15" pro drivers to mate with some ancient Altec horns. The woofer itself seemed to have a pleasing detailed sound to it but I have not put in the proper size box yet.
