Klipsch (sub 12) and room size

In case anyone remembers I have a overly large room and want to replace my PSW111. FS will be having this sub for 299$ on boxing day. I guess since it does have more power it should at least be better but opinions would be appreciated regarding build/sound quality

You have some nice speakers there. I was running a similiar setup to yourslef speaker-wise for my home theater system and had a Klipsch Sub-12 as part of the system for a while. The Sub-12 is a beast. It plays loud and low. I used to have my home theater setup in a large open area also and it was plenty. Here's the kicker though; are you planning on using this mostly for home theater, music, or both? The reason I am asking this is the Sub-12 is not a very good sub for music. It's overly boomy, lacks detail with music in the low frequencies, and is muddy sounding. It's a good home theater sub, but not so great for music. I replaced my Sub-12 with a DSW-PR0 600 (later ran two DSW PRO 600s) and I was much happier. The DSW was almost as good for HT as the SUB-12, but totally blew it away for music. Hope this helps.

I would be using it mostly for movies....but I do listen to music too...probably a 70-30 split.
I shouldn't be looking for a sub based on price but after the polk purchases my visa has scorched edges

Yeah I know what your saying about budget after paying for all of those speakers. That's something most of us experience fairly often with this hobby :-)

If I can give some advise though it is this; don't settle on a peace of gear because it is what you can afford at the time if you rather have something else that just happens to be more expensive. Go ahead and save up and get the peace of gear you really want. You'll save money doing this in the long run. I can't tell you how many times I've bought a piece of gear at a point in time becuase it was what I could afford when I really wanted something else. You may love what you buy, but you'll always wonder if that other piece of gear may be better and you'll eventually end up buying it anyways. In the end you've ended up spending more money, so go ahead and take a little longer to save up for what you really want.

I'm not saying don't get the SUB-12, it's a damn fine HT sub and if that is what you're looking for than it will work great. Think about what your really looking for though and if you think something else may be better for your needs but may cost a little more, take the time to save up for what you really want. Just my dos centavos.

I agree with everything steve has to say. In fact 1 of my sub-12's came from him over a year ago. Running two of them is amazing for home theater. My current room opens up into the kitchen and having each one at about 1/3 volume in a 14x30 room is over-kill (in a good way). I am moving into a house late next month and the room setup will be tricky to accommodate 2 woofers and I will likely be selling both of my 12's and getting one great woofer to replace them.

They hit hard and dig pretty deep but as steve said they are lacking big time for music. It's too bad you are in Canada or we could likely work out a great deal on the pair of mine but I feel shipping would spoil everything.

Thank you both for your insight.
We watch movies much louder than music. We find the acoustics inside the church magnifies the sounds quite well so cranking it isn't required. Does the sub12 work well at all levels or does it only shine when cranked?
The unfortunate part of where we live is that choices and the chance to test a sub is very limited if available at all..testing would be optimal. I guess I could buy then bring back right?
What I mean is that I don't have any opinions about a better sub other that what people might say online.

I think the sub performs pretty well at all levels. I usually have the sub at about 1/3 on the gain dial and it's more than enough during movies. Once you get around 2/3rd you get a lot of vibrations and it gets really sloppy. Depending on your listening preferences you shouldn't need it over half way as it is. Of course the source you are using will dictate how it responds as well. I have a lot of lower quality MP3's and it makes the sub sound like crap but cd's make it sound reasonable for it's price.

one last question..I connect it (pSW111)with one RCA cable via LFE which is how I now have the room wired up..is the sub12 the same or will i have to do some rewiring.
I found a pic of the back but is a bit low quality to tell which connects it has.
I will ask FS what their return policy is if I decide to buy

Same connection on back of the klipsch. That's how I've got both of mine wired up.
