Onkyo HT-RC270 and Monitor 70s, what should I expect?

Tonight I just picked up an Onkyo HT-RC270 for $425 from Amazon during a Lightning deal (couldn't pass it up). For those not familiar with the RC series they're very similar to NR models (in this case TX-NR708 except minus the RS232, 12V trigger, and one less HDMI input). I've been leaning towards onkyos for quite some time now based on the MultiEQ and Audyssey DSX options for front wides or front heights since my apartment is not suited well for a true 7.1 setup. I've got a pair of monitor70s as fronts, a CS2 center, and 4 monitor 40s for surround/wides/heights. (Currently i'm running off of an old kenwood VR-309 which has no HDMI capability, and no DTS master audio or Dolby TrueHD support, so i'm definitely in need of an upgrade)
Tonight I read in a few forums for this receiver that it actually doesn't pair well polks, in fact many were claiming that polks and onkyos don't go together well in general. Instead many were recommending pioneer receivers to go with the polk monitor series. Anyone here have an HT-RC270 (or similar model like TX-NR707, TX-NR808, TX-NR1008) and polk monitors? I'm curious what real polk folks think!! Hopefully I won't regret this quick purchase tonight, but the deal was so good and I had limited time to jump on it before finishing my research.
Thanks in advance!
Dan

Thanks guys, your feedback is definitely easing my worries. I also have a polk PSW-505 subwoofer which I really enjoy. I used to have an old boomy Sony WM40 sub, and some old kenwood that came with an HTIB 10 years ago, and I have to say I finally understand what people mean about a tight deep bass from a sub when it comes to music. I mostly listen to blurays and HDTV but occasionally i'll use some CD audio.
Thanks and happy holidays! -
We have similar set-ups. I have the HT-RC180 (110watts per channel). I noticed a big difference after about 2 months (break-in period?) with the Polks. They are starting to sound fantastic.

Who says Onkyo and Polk don't go together? That's news to me! My bedroom system is an Onkyo 604, a pair of Rti-4s and an 8" sub, 32" LCD, and a Toshiba HD-DVD as the DVD player. And RTIs are generally considered bright--but they're OK in this set up! The main system is an Onkyo TXSR-805 and M70s, CS2, and M30s, 12" 50lb 300 watt RMS sub (-25hz low). Pretty impressive in a medium sized room on the Sony ES BDP bitstreaming HD audio to the Onkyo. The important thing about M70 placement is to make sure that you're not too far from the adjacent walls and the listening position forms that desired TRIANGLE with the listener.
You're fine. Run the Audyssey and enjoy some films!

I think Onkyo and Polk are a great match.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I use that same Sony in my living room setup and I noticed the same thing until I modified it, it was a night and day improvement. -

Well, the good news Dan is that at least you now know who (on the other forums) is full of malarkey.
Running an Onkyo AVR (backup) with my Polks, bought a full 7.1 Onkyo/Polk setup for my daughter and son-in-law (and I wouldn't stick my granddaughter with a bad rig
), and have an Insignia () AVR running a Polk Soundbar downstairs on the rig my sons use for gaming. That Insignia R5101 ... something or other ... is actually made by Onkyo for BestBuy and is actually an Onkyo 508.
So .... as others have said ... ENJOY ! You did good ! :biggrin:Sal Palooza -
Thanks again for everyones comments, i definitely think those guys had no clue what they were talking about. Only thing i'm wondering is if I should have saved up for an RC180 or something thats a little beefier. (But then again at least I have the preouts so I can always step up to some external amps some day when I get a bigger house/apt/room). Also, any predictions about CES 2011 for new receivers? What new features might be on the horizon for 2011? (One place I read streaming video via network, and built in wifi perhaps...)

What you should have done it bought my pioneer vsx01thx for $350 shipped lol
Dont worry what others say about onkyo..I had an onkyo 607 hooked up to martin logans and sounded awesome
Onkyo makes some great sounding avr's and many people are just too fussy or expect miracles from a budger avr
My onkyo and polk rti was amazing and the monitors are slighly warmer than the rti so it will sound great...just pop in a blue ray and youl find out what your onkyo was made for.......doing great movies -
i have 2 different onkyo and polk setups both sound great.......whatever forum you read that on are full of it. Dont sweat it you should be very pleased with your purchase.Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.

You should be fine with that setup, I really like my onkyo with polks in my HT setup. I will agree with someones statement above that you will want either a sub or an amp to run these. I would suggest a good sub to offload the lower frequencies or an amp to run them well in large/full mode.Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:
