Speaker Calibration?

Am I doing this speaker calibration right? All reciever channels set at 0dB,sub at -5dB.Played S&V disc test tones, set all speakers to 75dB,but when I set my sub,I had to turn sub volume at sub down to 3 out of max.10 on dial to calibrate to 80dB.Seems like I'm not using the sub to it's potential by only having it barely turned on?Before calibration I had sub at 5-6 on dial and -5dB in reciever, but I guess it did seem kind of boomy.I do have the sub sitting close to listening position off to one side behind the couch, would this be the reason that I can only have sub volume at 3?Oh,BTW I have a H/K 520 and reference level worked out to be -11 on master volume.

good idea to calibrate your speakers. way to go. i find that most people often learn their subs are running louder than it should. it may seem now that you are lacking some bass... but like you said. before it was to boomy. find a nice middle ground and see how that works for ya.

    good luck.

I also have the h/k 520 and my settings are identicle. All channels set to 0 with bass to a -5. This seems to be the best settup for me also. One thing I have noticed that if you begin ramping up your bass gain and get close to +5 on the h/k you will begin distorting on your bass. You'll be able to tell right away because the sub just sounds like **** and very rumbly for lack of a better term.

I have even decreased less than -5 on the h/k and began turning up the gain on the subs but I heard no difference. Its just a matter of what set point you want to be at.

Good job on the calibration and now when you run the test noise from the h/k you at least have a good feal for all the levels when you start playing around. Its all about familiarity with your system and then you can safely tweak it to your own tastes.

    1001011010101010111011 Daddy,

I have my speakers set to 75 dB and the sub set to 85 dB -- I read that those are your target levels but I don't remember where I read that...

The secret is to set your system to what you like. Tweak away and have fun!
