Center Channel for 5JR+

Hi, all.

I have a pair for first generation 5JR+s (the ones labeled 5JR, but had the passive radiator). I bought them new in the late 80's, but they've been sitting in a closet for the last 13 years. We are remaking a bedroom into a small media room with just the basics and am in need of a center channel that will sound good with these Polks. Polk Support pointed me to the CSiA6, but that is seriously over the budget with everything else that's going into the room. Plus it's a bit on the wide side.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a center channel that will match up well with my 5JR+s, but won't break the bank? I came across the CSR. Nice on the price and on the size. Not sure of how it sounds, though.

Thanks, everyone.

You could probably find another pair of 5Jr+ on ebay or the FM - that would be the perfect match. If you were patient and have the time, a single speaker will pop up once in a while. Of course, it will not match the color of the ones you have.

I suppose I'm not looking for a complete match. I was even thinking of getting a set of TSi100's from Best Buy and a matched center, but I can't believe that they would sound better than these. Of course, technology advances and my speakers are over 20 years old. You never know.

In an ideal situation, I definitely would want a total match, but this is for a secondary application in a small media room that is not my primary movie watching location. I would definitely be listening to more music in this room than watching TV or movies. I would, therefore, be willing to make concessions. That being said, if someone had a 5JR+ that I could get my hands on, I'd pick it up and call it a day.

I don't suppose that with the new plasma/LCD TVs that a center channel must be magnetically sheilded anymore. Anyone know for sure? If it still needs to be, then another 5JR+ would not fit the bill.

I'm located in south Coral Springs, FL.

I am using my 5jrs right next to my lcd and have had no problems. I am using both as a center channel with Monitor 10bs as my fronts and rears.

Yep. I was reading on the web that for LCD and plasma sets that magnetic shielding is not required. Good to know. I actually picked up a pair if RTi38s today and will compare them to the 5JRs. Would probably be easier to get a match for the RTi38s.

It is a stereo center, as I currently do not have a working surround processor. I just wanted to say that it has not bothered my tv and that the 5jrs sound great on 8 inch high stands bookending the tv. It seems like I should be able to just run them as a 4 ohm center when I get a processor though.
