Good news:

I picked a pair of thes up off the bay for a very good price.

Bad news:

He shipped them in a box with a few sheets of paper and some styrofoam peanuts.(Very few, though) These speakers have ports so a lot of the peanuts ended up inside the cabinets of the speakers. I took off the backs and removed all the nuts and hooked the spaeks up to the main rig.

One speaker is fine, the other has a mean vibration with any type of decent bass. I removed the driver, checked for any excess foreign objects and put it back in. It's tight as far as I can tell. Same problem.

Is the driver fried? Anyone know how to get a replacement? I contacted the seller, he refunded me $5 from the difference in shipping he promised but didn't address my issue. I contacted again tonight.

Thoughts?

You sound screwed and the Atom isn't that great of a loudspeaker to boot. Drop a line or call to Paradigm tomorrow and see what they say. I'd bet you'll be in deeper getting a replacement than they are actually worth so a serious decision will have to be made.

If you end up more out of pocket to fix it, then go all out and upgrade the xover's as well. If anything you'll get what you invest in them if you go above and beyond to provide an example of the best Atom on the market. That's what I would do.

Just an observation based on previous ownership. That sucks and I'd be surprised if you get any balance from the seller to make it even.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If you paid paypal, file a claim and get your money back. He'll try to re-coop by filing a claim with the shipping company, but he won't win due to bad packing.

Dave, file a claim because I have a feeling you're going to end up having a lot in those. That sucks!

Paradigm wants $70 before shipping to fix. That's crazy for what I paid for them. We'll see what happens......

Anyone know where to get a replacement driver?

Did you check to see if the accordian spider is still glued to the speaker metal frame? That seperation would sound good until you crank the bass and then that's when the cone goes wild since there's no restricted and controled pulses anymore. Polks come loose, Bose definately come loose.

Check again, push outward on the woofer cone from behind it and watch to see if that spider leaves the metal frame.

Also, where do the cone speaker wires rest when put the speaker back into the cabinet. Don't let them rest on the back of the woofer..you'd get your same symptoms that way too.

    Good luck

IMO the Atoms along with PSB's original Alphas were great little speakers for the money.Did you confirm that Paradigm still has the driver available for $70?Since they are essentially freebies that doesn't seem completely out of line.

He was pushing the recone. I asked about another driver and was politely pushed towards the recone. I talked to them before I knew of the refund. Now I have time to be patient.

I really think I'm going to like them once they're ready.

The newer PSB with the rounded back sound better than the originals,
I own both and the latter wins, hands down!

Was this someone at Canadian CS?I know someone who recently purchased a new woofer for a late 80's 5se for about $50ish.Though it is possible they no longer stock replacements for certain models. While they did source tweeters from the likes of Vifa unfortunately most if not all of the woofers were their own custom proprietary designs so they are the only source.
I really think I'm going to like them once they're ready.
While I have not heard more recent offerings I was always impressed with their and PSB's budget models.

Yes I would expect that with improvements in driver design and materials that Mr Barton would be able to improve upon his little gems.

That's the craziest statement I've read today.
