Target really screwed this one up...

So I ordered some nice things for my girlfriend for Christmas from Target.com...and I specifically asked that no info for it be sent, no prices, etc.
They only have my email address.

She has a target.com account that goes to the same physical address, but different (completely different) email address.

Today, she gets an email saying "hey, fill out this review of the items you recently bought and you'll be entered for a $500 gift card".

Guess what list was below that? They sent her the entire list of Christmas presents I bought her from Target.com, and are wrapped under the tree right now.

Really? How the hell did they mix my account up with hers. I verified by logging into Target.com and none of her info is on the order or my account. Currently I'm on the phone with their customer service trying to see how my personal information got leaked/crossed with another account. What else could have been leaked? My credit card information?

Now I have to scramble and correct this, and they're offering me a $10 gift card. Seriously? That won't even cover the gas I'll have to use to go fix this at the last moment. They basically said "sorry we screwed up, we cannot fix it but we can give you a $10 gift card".

No, buddy, you're going to fix this, and you're going to tell me how you're going to fix my information leaking out. That's a serious breach of privacy, and if it got mixed with my girlfriends data, what else may have leaked out?

so mad right now. Girlfriend was like wtf? Thanks for the list!

That sucks! Target has some good prices, but their CS has something to be desired.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

That's just awful, completely inexcusable! Sure there are worse things in the world that could have happened, but in context that's about worst case scenario.

Note to self, never order online from Target.

Seriously,w hat if you lived in an apartment building? Would they just send your info to someone else at the same address??? Ludicrous.

Not even taking into account the whole "ruining the surprise" thing with the girl. Real bummer.

I hate being on hold. Time to call a lawyer. or the BBB

A lawyer would definitely be overkill in this situation Sal, although I understand why you'd feel that way.

Making a report to the BBB wouldn't be a bad idea, as customer data is supposed to be kept separate regardless of what address you live at.

The fact that a mixup occured blows, no doubt..........

But is your complaint that Target leaked the information to itself and you're freaking out that the merchant you bought something from saw it because they sent it to themselves?

The issue is the email mixup......but maybe you have two separate accounts (his/hers) that both point to the same email address..........which, if true, is your fault.

I think you missed the second paragraph the OP wrote. They have completely different email accounts and those are linked to completely different Target.com accounts.

To the OP, you have a legitimate claim that information leaked over to an account that should not have been there at all. Just because a physical address matches up, does not mean that those accounts should ever be linked together. It easily could have been the previous resident that also had a Target.com account. While no personal information was leaked, it definitely provides someone else with information they shouldn't have in the first place.

Good luck on getting this resolved and I sincerely hope they get you something more than a $10 gift card.

When/if you are able to get off of hold, and speak with a live human being, be sure to ask for a name and physical address of a person to whom you can send written correspondence to.

Email, to be sure, but WRITTEN correspondence to a specific person with a specific title in a specific department designed to rectify this type of problem will bring better results, IMO.
This will help prevent Target from playing the shell game:
"Oh, we're sorry, but Betty looked into the matter and wasn't able to determine any problems on our end".
    "What's Betty's title and department /"
    "Uh .... Assistant Custodian, Housekeeping".

Sounds like the same computer IP address is happening here.
I know your a computer genius and should have an answer as to how this happened.

Now you know I'm only just beginning in this computerized world around me.
    Sorry that happened to you.

Why do people find this surprising? It happens all the time. It's a chance you take doing business on the internet.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

That's like saying "the chance you take doing business in person is them handing your receipt to someone else's house" The risk is there but that doesn't mean you just sit back and "deal with it."

There's a number of different ways that mix-up can occur, especially when it comes to ecommerce databases and customer recognition systems. While your order history was shared with your GF, it doesn't sound like your PII was. Embarrasing mix-up, but it's pretty common, and not difficult to resolve in the customer management system.
