Which one is better and why? Does anybody know anything about the Optoma HD22?
I'm about to pull the trigger, I just need to do a bit more investigation.
Oh yeah, one more thing. Sitting position will be 12' from the wall which will have a 100" screen...is this too close? Yeah I know about the online calculators, but in the real world, is it too close because it seems to be on the edge spec-wise.

you can go bigger in my opinion, so don't sweat that part. is there any way to audition both technologies? i personally haven't seen a dlp projector in action. but i do read about some persons are more prone to seeing a "rainbow effect". you can research that term if you like.
on the flip side, many do not like the "screen door effect" of lcd. that is more dependant on how close you are to the screen. i haven't seen really anyone else's projector, but my panny 4000 has very minimal screen door effect and gives a more "film-like" appeal. it may not POP quite as much though as it tends to just barely soften the picture over others that are more afflicted with "sde".
i'm sure sherard will chime in about bypassing lcd and dlp altogether for lcos. but then you're in a different league and price scale. though i'm sure nobody can argue lcos is better. i didn't have that kind of coin so i had to veer off into the lcd direction.

Sherard referred me to this one and I got it from these people and have not looked back. its refurbished but looks brand new and the picture looks excellent. 110" screen at 11.5' and does not hurt my eyes just watched Avatar the other night and was amazed, I will never go to the movies again. also absolutely no screen door effect.

my opinion, go LCoS (also called D-ILA) from JVC. No rainbow effect like DLPs, no screen door effect like LCDs. Higher native contrast ratios without the use of so-called dynamic iris controls which affects image.
-
I'm almost afraid to look at the LCoS options....they already sound out of my price range.
If this helps any....my pj will be strictly for watching movies and concerts. NO SPORTS, and NO T.V. (I voluntarily got rid of cable years ago).

Love my JVC projector. Had the Epson LCD projector as well and never really had a problem with SDE sitting 12' away. Owned a 62" DLP television and I feel in the class of seeing the RBE. I purchased a Samsung LED to replace the DLP and couldn't be happier. If you have the extra coin look into the LCoS projector's, Sony makes them as well, if not, I'd lean more towards the LCD projector's. As far as brands, look into the Epson's and the Panny LCD projector's, them seem to be the best bang for the buck right now.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!

I'm on my 3rd LCD FP. I'm running an Epson 1080UB right now, 7' from a 96" screen. The image is amazing. You can go bigger, in fact 12' from a 100" is too far IMO. Like Grimster above says about SDE, that was an issue with lower rez PJ but it does not exist with higher rez PJ.
I avoided DLP FP's due to the rainbow effect. My first was a DLP and it was quickly shipped back and exchanged for an LCD, and I've never looked back. Some say DLP will produce better blacks, but that was years ago.
I have purchased all my projectors from projectorpeople.com and will never shop anywhere else. Fantastic company.If...

here is a pic of my Epson 6100 in post # 32, 110" screen 1080p click on it to make it larger. Not bad for $900, and I like it because its a big projector, lets you know its not a toy.

I've ben living with a Sharp projector xv-z3000 DLP with 100" Grandview screen since 2006 It is great and I love what it does for me especially, with my Blu Rays and HD DVD's.. Before I pulled the trigger on it I additioned many others and the LCD did not do it for me at the time, the Sharp was the one who preformed best for me within my price range. I still enjoy going to the Highend stores and seeing the latest and greatiest toys out their. Even still I dont feel the need to upgrade.Polks All The Way

I love DLP. The screen-door effect of LCD drives me crazy. Also I love how text loks on a DLP projector. its way crisp. and LCD contrast makes things a little fuzzy in my opinion. Also, some DLP's have solid-state illumination, which mean never change a bulb. Another thing is that LCD has the potential for color decay over time.design is where science and art break even.

let me take away the worry i instilled by mentioning screen door effect on lcd. with my panny, i don't see screen door effect until about 2-3 feet away from my 135" screen. the panny does better than most all other lcds due to "smoothscreen" technology or whatever they call it. either way, it is basically a non-issue.

My old Epson 8500UB didn't have the screen door effect. I went with LCD over DLP precisely because the pricier DLPs still suffer from a degree of rainbow effect. To be fair however, both technologies work well when implemented properly. I've seen some DLPs that would make you **** your pants, but they cost way more than an LCD that IMO looks better than all the DLP in the same price bracket.

Both SDE and RBE are fully subjective. The OP probably will not notice any SDE on the Epson units since that is now to a minimum. Technology in the Epsons are fantastic. The first one I seen was Grimsters and I have since followed them to current. I recommend Epson because for the price they are very good. The top model gets close to the JVC's but not quite. The Panny 4000U ($2K) is great but depends on your budget. The black level of the higher end Epson pulls ahead slightly over the Panny in black level. However the Panny has a great feature set. If I were on a budget, $1000 or less, check out the Epson I posted in your other thread. The 6100 at PPeople is a great deal, they will also allow you to demo the unit for X amount of hours and return it if your not happy.
Seating distance, though there are standards can be adjusted. I'm about 12.5' from a 126" screen and there are no problems at all. Any questions feel free to ask. If your interested in a JVC I have one in excellent/mint condition that I'd sell you. JVC projectors are excellent, kuro- like black levels and a stunning image. I sold my HD1 to Grimster and now own a RS10. They are expensive starting around 4k a pop, but I'm hooked on them.
Edit: Any questions just ask. Epson if your on a budget wanting best image possible.

+1 on this. I said it before, but I'm not the know it all guy. I do get out and look at them, due to always looking for the next best thing outside of my JVC. If I were more serious about the hobby I would buy a Sim2 PJ, but for some reason I just can't see spending 20K on a projector.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Typically, so long as the projector has lens shift, placement is pretty flexible. For instance, with my Epson 8500UB, I have it mounted on a shelf on the back wall... but it fired just fine from a table down at the seating level of my couch too. The lens shift gives you enough placement options that you can really stick it just about anywhere. That said, I kinda' wish I had ceiling mounted it now, mostly 'cause I can't play Kinect in front of it. I kinda' have to put Kinect off to one side. :biggrin:Equipment list:

So very true. With the 720p units SDE was noticeable on my Z3 at 4'. But now, with my Epson 1080UB feeding it a pure 1080p signal you cannot see SDE at 1'.
SDE does not exist on quality 1080p machines.If...

I was under the impression that decent 1080p projectors were 2k+, which is a big reason i've never considered one over an HDTV."Dr Dunn admitted that his research could also be interpreted as evidence that women are shallower than men. I've never considered large HDTV's mainly because of there price compared to projectors. You can do so much more, go so much bigger and have equal the PQ for less.If...

Wish I could say the same Ron-P. For me it was "seeing to believe it" . Once I saw Grimsters setup I had to go front projection. Now, I can definitely agree with you and am right there with you bro. Popcorn in hand of course.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I have an Infocus X-1 Dlp projector that has been around for about 7 years now. I sit about 15 feet from a 112" screen and the picture is great! I do notice a rainbow now and then but it is when I am really tired and nodding off. The resolution is running at 1080I through the vga port. You can run a 1080I dvd player through the vga port with a ypbr adapter. I was going to upgrade to a higher resolution projector but the nice girl at Infocus told me that my picture would be no better than what it is now. It all depends on the source material being fed to it. One dvd can look great and the next one is not so great. With the new HDTV and an HDTV tuner, tv has never looked this good! The bigger the screen, the more the quality of the source material will show.

At 112" screen a full 080p HD PJ is a world of difference. I would recommend you get and look at some. BB carries the Epson and the Optoma.
