Thier earnings tanked today. I don't see Best Buy making any big comebacks. I am guessing they will last 7 or 8 more years in some form or fashion before disappearing completely. To me it's like Barnes & Noble. I go in, look around, and go home and buy what I want online. Besides, BD disks for 25 bucks? WTF?

As much as I hate to say it I find myself purchasing movies from Wally World over Best Buy nowadays. I also noticed Walmart seems to be picking up some of the more popular brands as well.

BB will be the next CC.

And Grimster....I would gladly pay less for the same title at Wallyworld. If BB was some high end place that had knowledgeable help and stellar service, I'd gladly drop a few bucks extra to help keep them around, but not BB.

I hate them for taking a Seattle audio institution (and my early audio memories) and turning it into a caricature of itself.

Is this good or bad for niche AV retailers? The only time I'm in a BB is to see what they are blowing out.

Hum, Future Shop is BB's sister company (meaning BB owns FS) here in Canada and I wonder how it would affect them. It would be nasty loosing to store chains all at once. In my area, there isn't that much choice so we might be very limited to physically shop before buying. The very few small boutique stores in my area do not carry Polk at all, FS was the only one IMO :frown: I guess we will have to cross the bridge to Ottawa, Ontario to physically shop speakers :frown:

Now, back to the US and Polk, I wonder how this potential store chain(s) closure may affect brands like Polk???

They seem to have the same problem that Tweeter did, getting
hurt by stale TV sales. They stocked up with higher end new tech, and
everybody went out bargain hunting. The price for 32-42" sets not
on the bleeding edge have dropped like a rock. Who needs 3d or the latest
tech. Add to it the fact that most people bought new sets a year or two ago
when the standard changed. Double whammy.

Haven't set foot in one for years now. Amazon has better prices day-in and day-out and with their street day delivery I save time and money.

    Bye bye Best Buy.

I appreciate their sales from time to time, but their retail prices for the most part with high state taxes and poor service really limit how much I purchase from them. I live in a rural area, so at times they are the only place for some purchases or items in a pinch, but I would much prefer to buy online or elsewhere.

How do you take care of you live auditionning? Any other Polk dealer store in your area? I don't think too many US boutiques would carry Polk, right?

Live auditioning at a store does **** for you.

Completely different environment, completely different gear running it, with a bunch of people running around touching this/that it's really hard to judge whether anything' sounds remotely 'ok'.

Fully understand your point however, somewhat better than buying blind online and fact my greatest worry is that if all stores closes we will be stuck with blind purchase more than ever and guest what, once online dealers manage to kills most of the stores they will jack-up pricing. Same vicious circle that happened with after big store killed most of the mom and pop businesses. But has to be worse this time around as over paying efty prices, you will also buying stuff that quite well be a deception on many occasions :frown:

I must be the only one here who bought a lot at best buy this year. For the first time in my life I am a silver reward zone member. I have purchased a new tv, a bell'o stand for it, ipad, macbook pro, various video games, and a bunch of cheap blu rays this year from them. For a guy who loves to find great deals, it just makes more sense to shop them than some other alternatives. My tv was a GREAT price where nobody was even close, the computers give you the reward zone points (online from apple and apple stores both charge tax and shipping costs extra online) so they were the place to get what I wanted. Given, most items (receivers and speakers) can be had for way cheaper online but there are certain things that they make convenient and getting a 50 or 60 dollar gift card in the meantime isnt a bad deal either.

I haven't bought anything there in about 5 years or so. I got real tired of "security" **** with me at the door, and the fact that the wanted to sell me an extended warranty on AA batteries. There are much better places to shop, online and brick and mortar.

At least here in Texas, you don't have to stop for 'security.' Every time I get asked to show my receipt I simply say no thank you and keep walking.

When we bought our TV, Best Buy was about $200 higher than Amazon and $100 higher than Crutchfield. Plus tax on a couple thousand dollars adds up as well. That's not their fault though.

I love Best Buy's 36 months no interest. They do have competitive prices in HT stuff so I'm going to miss them if they're not there for my next upgrade.

How do you upgrade at Best Buy? Ours doesn't carry anything but the lowest models for most brands of electronics and speakers. Maybe the ones that have a Magnolia are better.

Their listening rooms are a joke. I feel almost sorry for the guy in there getting snookered by some dude wearing a blue shirt. Poor sap.

I will most likely visit BB October 2011 to see what 1080p projectors they are blowing out. Might be time then to pick up a nice JVC and get a discount equivalent to a new bulb in addition. They simply have no value add.

I laugh seeing some idiot walk out with a 3 meter HDMI cable that cost him $120.

Well, I should have mentioned that I only buy TV's from them (and my last purchase was a projector). I never get the latest technology because I find it stupid to pay such a premium and I really don't mind staying 1-2 years back.

A buddy of mine wanted a gaming rig and 5.1. I hooked him up with a PSB T45 (L/C/R) Alphas (S L/R) and 10 inch Sub for $300 (insane find). Went to BB and picked up a Yamaha receiver (was going to have them price match), X Box 360, a few games, HD add on, extra controllers.

Get to the check out and the HARD sell on the upgrade warranty. Using AMEX mr. clerk they double up the warranty. They just would NOT stop pushing. I look at my friend, he shrugged, I actually told the clerk to f-himself and left a shopping cart full of product right there. That was 4 years ago.

At some point, the free tax ride will die a horrible death.
Given where budgets are, they either start taxing online orders
or throw everyone else to the ground and take their wallet.
And that will just hasten the run to online retail.
I still buy most of my stuff local. Here in Dallas, there
are just too many places competing NOT to get a good deal
somewhere. Add closeouts, demos, and high end dealer trade ins,
I have TOO many places to get stuff. I seldom find stuff cheaper online.
But most of the country doesn't have those options.

I don't think Polk Audio would be very happy if BB went out.
I would think it is Polk's largest customer.
It would definately be another punch in the stomach for audio in general.
Think of the companies that would be affected, from car audio to TV to software companies, all will feel the pinch.

I personally would hate to see it.
I don't shop there, but it would not be good for anyone if they were to go.:frown:

Funny, every time I walk into the Best Buy here its usually pretty packed and there's always a line at the check out counter. Unlike the Circuit City here before they closed.
