Should I share my sale price

Two people I don't know at all emailed me after an Audiogon Sales to ask how much I sold something for.

My instinct is to help people. At the same time I was like hey buddy go buy your own blue book subscription like I did and stop being a leach.

Then I thought one might be the guy's wife and I definitely shouldn't tell her!!!

That said, if someone here asked about a piece of equipment - not my specific sales, I'd have no problem helping out.

This is rhetorical. These are the questions I can think about when not working! I must be on easy street.

I've thought about emailing people to ask that. I don't see why it would hurt. I'm not big on audiogon but I wish it had a feature like ebay that if you sign up you get to see what a listing sold for. (If it has this someone let me know)

I've done that once in the past, asked someone what their item sold for. In my case I was going to be selling the same item, but couldn't dig up any recent sales on the net. This particular piece was a bit dated(old DPL processor). Since the number of interested parties would be limited, I actually waited for his item to sell so as to not create any competition. The seller was kind enough to give me a ballpark number.

It's up to you. It's a private party sale and the terms of disclosure are up to those involved. If it makes you so uncomfortable that you have to ask about etiquette then there is your answer.

You are not obligated to report anything about the sale to anyone but the IRS and even then, most private party sales are exempt from reporting anyhow. You are completely within your rights to tell the people asking that the sale is private and you are not at liberty to discuss the details of the transaction. Tell them they are free to contact the buyer and if he/she wishes to disclose the info, that's on them. If they don't like it, TFB.

At the same time, it doesn't really hurt to give up the info. You can give a ballpark figure like what was said. Also, if it is a spouse asking for verification of the purchase price to either put the purchasing spouse in the dog house or what have you, that's not on you. Caveat emptor, buyer beware. Private party sales are final unless you state that you will cover damages or something. Caveat emptor holds up in court and if the buyer gets himself or herself in trouble for buying something they can't afford, that's their problem, not yours and you are no obligated to refund the money. Especially if they have teh item, in good working condition.

Either way you go, it's your info, your right to handle it as you please. Don't let others pressure you in to doing something you aren't comfortable with.

Grimmace if you pay an extra $50/$60 (I forget the cost now) you can have access to the "audio blue book". It does show transaction history and sale prices etc. The most common items are there and some with fewer sales may not be. The information isn't always up to date or 100% accurate but what is there can be useful.

Audiogon use to leave the sale price posted, left it up to you to remove. Not any more, they remove it automatically. I suspect they do that so that you will more inclined to purchase their Bluebook.
