With the recent thread about DSD downloads and computer/server based sources, I thought this article might be of interest.

The future isn't looking as bright as some might lead you to think.

I wouldn't think any digital format today is safe down the road, so saving music I would think analog is the only way to save it.

Good post. File management is a huge problem in my world (I.T.). These kinds of problems exist across the digital domain. Poor backup policy. End users (in this case, engineers and archivists) are responsible for making the proper duplicates and storing them in separate locations, etc. Unfortunately, that really wasn't well understood in the early days of digital.

Keep in mind though, that all of those problems are due to human error, not an inherent problem with digital format.

Backup, backup, backup and backup your backups.

Move on. Nothing new here. The audio and movie industry have been telling us for years how the analog tapes are deteriorating, and being lost. It is infinitely easier to backup digital data than analog data. Of course, if you lose it then that is the operator's fault, not the medium.

Easier yes, but not good enough it seems.
EMI and Universal, immediately convert files of new albums onto systems like Linear Tape-Open (LTO), a heavy-duty digital-tape format used by banks to back up their data, and store the tapes in vaults around the country.

Very interesting read, Jesse. Thanks for posting it.

This goes in hand with what I've been saying for a long time.

I've recently somewhat embraced the digital age finally, and begun to download music...but it'll still never be a substitute for real CD's or vinyl to me. The only music that I've even downloaded so far though, has been live Grateful Dead shows that aren't available on official releases...and I doubt that my downloading will ever extend much beyond that realm.

Boring. If you believe that digital and it's backups will sudden disappear you should lay off the kool-aid.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

The Library of Congress doesn't seem like they would need to lay off the Kool-aid. If there ever was an authority on preservation, they would be it.

While I can not comment on their efficiency......I can say with complete certainty that entire data, data transfer, and media preservation industries are guided by the Library of Congress. Whether it's on film, paper, photos, microfiche or discs matters not.

The R&D process they have for medium preservation is mind boggling. They have actually shown and proved that some of the discs we listen too everyday can and will deteriorate over time. Somewhere deep in the depths of this forum is a video that shows exactly how this happens.
