Hi, I just bought a Marantz CD player that will be connected to an old Onkyo Receiver and a pair of McIntosh 3-way speakers. It is actually for my father who will be listening to his CD collections on it.
My question is, since his Onkyo Receiver is almost 15 years old (it was their flagship receiver at the time for around $2,500), I want his new Marantz CD player to do its DAC work, and not the receiver doing the work.
If I connect digitally using either a coaxial or an optical cable from the CD player to a Receiver, will I let my receiver do the DAC work and not the CD player; should I connect using an RCA cable for the CD player to do its DAC work?
So, what would be the best way to connect between the CD player and the Receiver, so that the new CD player does its job of using its newest DAC to process sounds for my father's setup?
Thank you.

A good quality RCA cable for the left and right analog outputs to the Onkyo.
I think you will like the Marantz. -
What Dave said, get a 'good' set of RCA analog cables, fire it up and enjoy.Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.

What Russ means by a "good set of RCA analog cables" is not the ones you find at Walmart. Signal cable is a good place to start and tell Frank your a member here for a discount.HT SYSTEM-

So, I do have to use an RCA cable in order to make the CD player do it DAC work then, not via a Digital Cable from a CD player to a recevier.
Thank you for your advice! -

Yes! If you use the digital outs on the CDP (coaxial or optical) the Recevier's DACs have to transform the digital bitstream to analog.
If you run RCA cables out from the CDP...the signal has already gone through the DAC process...as those are analog cables to the receiver.
So, as mentioned above. RCA from the Marantz to the Onkyo if you want to use the Marantz DACs.
Have fun...that's a pretty nice CD player in its price category.

Thank you for clarifying.
I will use an RCA cable then. -
The Signal Cable looks like a very good quality RCA cable.
I will get the 2ft Reference one for around $80 for my father too.
Thank you for your information!
