I think Pioneer does what a lot of Yamaha receivers do in that they set your front speakers to "Large". Check to see if yours did that and re-run the auto calibration with them set to small. I've read that's helped a few people wake up their subs in that situation.

Ok, sorry just reread your first post. I thought you was saying the a7's wasn't producing enough bass.

Uhm, if I recall correctly...didn't you just purchase your sub?

Check the settings on your receiver, since it's your first sub maybe you don't have it setup properly on your AVR+rear of your sub. Also, don't expect much if you haven't broken it in yet.

Takes about twice that amount of time to properly break in speakers, especially subwoofers.

Phase will depend on placement/acoustics so unless someone was there physically we can't tell you whether it's right or wrong.

Do you have your subwoofer connected to your AVR via LFE?

Also, have you played around with placement? Placement is just as important as simply choosing the subwoofer you plan to implement into your system.

It won't necessarily hit harder, but it could sound a bit 'boomy' or a bit more 'accurate' depending where it's placed as well as helping it blend in with your RTiA's.

As for phase, you want your sub's driver to be firing in the same phase as your main speakers. The difference is night and day if you listen carefully using a track with a steady bass-line. If the phase is wrong, you'll notice less bass because your sub's bass is competing/cancelling out the bass being played by your mains.

In this case, like you said when you shut it off/disconnected your subwoofer...the difference was minimal if any.

Agreed with the phase. If you suspect your phase is not correct, break out the SPL meter. When the sub is out of phase with the mains you should notice a drop in SPL or an overpowering in the lowest frequences and bass which is not full and even.

It's sometimes hard to do so, I know I had some trouble listening for it and my ears are still young!

Erik, I'm assuming you either did the speaker crawl to find the right placement for your sub or you used an SPL meter. Maybe your listening position is simply in a null? Have you tried looking at utilizing REW?
