once again i come to the oracle collective.

any experience both as far as sound and aging problems, i believe ribbons can bring their own set of challenges as they age.

also a stereophile article from 91, which lauded the speakers, spoke about the rep from apogee setting up these guys in the reviewers home, eventually ending up 48 inches from the rear wall.

talk about a deal breaker in a small home.

i understand that was optimal, but would ribbons in general be acceptable without perfect placement.

Ribbons are alittle tricky with placement. Humidity is also bad. Even though the Apogee was a great speaker in it's own right, you need a good amp that can dip down to 2 ohms for those puppies, they suck up the juice.

Scott, I need to come go shopping where you live. You have been finding some interesting things lately.

I have always wanted a pair of Apogee Ribbons. They are so nice sounding to me.

Suggestions, Good power that can handle low Ohm's. Some Apogee are known to dip in the 1 ohm realm.

Keep in a dry area. The ribbons don't like to much moisture.

Place about 3 feet off the back wall. If memory serves they needed room to breath.
Although the Centaur minor had cone speakers for the lows? So maybe not as big and issue.

Sit back and enjoy. They are nice speakers if in good working order.

Ribbons can be amazing and Apogee's are phenominal, but make sure your amp is stable to 2 ohms (or better) as they can be amp killers. Absolutely any dipole needs a lot of room behind and beside to be at their best. With the Carvers I have them at 3' from the back wall and 4' from the sides with 7' between them. Less that does reduce the soundstage.

sounds like good speakers, but not for us.

my marantzma500s would probably be okay with them, but between space requirements and not knowing where and how they were stored or used, i guess i will pass.

halo, im gonna get you some pics soon, maybe we can horse trade

    Sounds good!

BTW....there is a guy on Craigslist that lives in Cartersville. I talked to him yesterday, seems like a nice guy. He has tons of stuff for sale. Mostly speakers with several pairs being Kef. Didn't have any Polk's though. :frown:

He is much closer to you. You might want to call him as well. Here is a link to some of what he has listed so far.

yeah halo, i saw the 104 ad, emailed, cant remember now what the dealbreaker was, he might not even responded.

anybody who has ever had experience with those old 103-104 type kefs, i would invite your opinions.

dont wanna be chasing overrated stuff.

my eventual goal is a quality preamp to go with marantz amps, a turntable and some lsi action.

a two channel rig all my own, that i dont have to be ashamed of.
